The building in Vancouver was completed in 2006 and the building designed by Shigeru Ban is only at the proposal stage, ie. hasn’t been built yet, so the Vancouver building was designed years before the one in New York.
It’s a nice idea but not exactly unique. There’s an apartment building where I live in Charlotte, NC (not exactly a Mecca for architects) that uses this same idea.
SBA had the design public several years ago for the metal shutter houses that eventually went in NYC.
In any event, the detailing of this project is horrible when compared to that of Ban. And the Metal shutter houses are METAL SHUTTERS not garage doors. The project uses metal shutters as a way to delegate between public and private spaces. This project uses garage doors as a novelty to sell space. Other than that, this project is just aesthetically displeasing.
Ban wins. Hands down.
for those counting, this project in seattle by miller/hull won a national aia award in 2002 and has “garage door windows,” and i’m sure it’s been done before.

We had an aluminum and glass garage door intalled in our loft in Yaletown by a company called Canadian Doormaster Electric Ltd. They did a good job and we love the doors. In the summer, and even spring and fall, it’s great to be able to open the place up to the outdoors and it makes the space feel so much larger when they’re open

I regards this building as a pathetic eclectic copy of the Metal Shutter Houses designed by Shigeru Ban in New York.

I like this, but I wonder how it meets the energy code? Overhead doors are usually so leaky.

I like/love the idea, but how long before someone takes a fall? That’s a pretty low sill.
Avoid drunken summer parties and children.

Garage doors in lofts are pretty common here in Denver, CO.

I live in Vancouver and want to change the windows in our loft to this style. Does anyone know a good company that can do this here in Vancouver?
Thanks in advance,
ROb

I like the Vancouver building AND the building by Shigeru Ban.
It’s not a competition. Mature people are capable of appreciating both. Some of you need to grow up.
