House in Vancouver, Canada
After ten years of working together for well-known Vancouver architect Bing Thom, Matthew Woodruff and Clinton Cuddington recently formed their own firm called Measured Architecture. One of their first projects to showcase their work is this modern house which was built in a very old neighborhood of Vancouver which is full of traditional homes.

They are going to castigate me for this but this house is a bunch of shapes and walls for the sake of shapes and walls. This is the same as most modern art, because you are different does not make you good.

You’ve made a superficial observation that is common among people who don’t understand modern architecture.
The “shapes and walls” that you seem to be suggesting are useless, actually serve a function. Besides the obvious structural function, the architects use the “shapes and walls” to manipulate light and space. Open spaces filled with natural light that flows from room to room is a common feature of modern architecture.
The “shapes and walls” are often placed where they are because they’re responding to the direction of the sun throughout the day. Some of the “shapes and walls” let light in, while others keep it out. There is a lot of thought put into the function and purpose of those shapes and walls.
Not understanding modern architecture (and art), contributes to not being able to appreciate it.
I know that I didn’t fully appreciate modern architecture (or art) until I understood it, and until then, I made incorrect superficial observations as well.

Once, I was at Bing Thom for an interview as a BCIT graduate. Now, I am in Vietnam. I like green design philosophy pertaining to natural material applications and color. A few things to share with when looking at the built building. Firstly, asymmetric form is composed to suit to building’s location and orientation on the site. Then, the interior circulation evidently creates a spacious and functional living place

ry – I’m curious to why you are even looking at a site like this if this is how you truly feel. Sounds more like you like to throw the occasional bomb just to see what kind of response you might get. To criticize this house because you say it has “just a bunch of shapes and walls” is doing nothing more than showing your own ignorance.
A great house and one I’d love to live in.
