Shell seating collection by Nicholls+Scott

Designers Nicholls+Scott have produced the Shell range of seating, which includes three stools and a dining chair.  The pieces are all hollow lightweight structures capable of carrying loads far in excess than their own weight implies. Each piece is made from 2.0mm sheet aluminium, cut, bent, welded and polished or sprayed. The faceted aesthetic is derived from the space frame principle of construction which affords minimal material use to achieve phenomenal strength.

Building a modern house in Minnesota

We love the trend of people blogging about their experiences while building their own homes. We’ve featured a few of these blogs in the past, and today we’re posting about “From the Ground Up,” a blog created by homeowner Jason Hammond to document the whole process of building a modern house in the suburbs of the twin cities of Minneapolis-St Paul, Minnesota.

In the 159 posts that have been made since Jason began the blog back in March of 2007, he talks about his daily experiences of the design and building of the house, working with the architect and general contractor, and selecting materials and finishings.

Olivomare Restaurant by Pierluigi Piu

Italian designer Pierluigi Piu created this interior for the Olivomare Restaurant in London’s Belgravia district.  Upon entering the dining area, you’re presented with a large wall clad in an M.C. Escher inspired pattern of neverending fish, an obvious nod to the fact that the restaurant serves seafood.  The references to ocean life continue with lighting overhead that is diffused by a thin nylon net, which appears to be luminescent tentacles, evoking a stray shoal of jellyfishes or sea anemones.  There is also a room divider which looks like an enlarged fishing net, and a small dining room at the back clad in a wavy relief meant to evoke the sandy surface of the beach when moulded by the wind.  Finally, a trip to the washrooms involves entering into a surrounding of red branches from a coral reef.

Coin Furniture by Johnny Swing

Vermont based Johnny Swing is a master of repurposed material, and here we see his collection of seating that uses a variety of coins (quarters, nickels, half-dollars) to produce a couch and some chairs.  The Nickel Couch alone uses approximately 7000 nickels (that’s $350 worth of nickels for those of you too lazy to do the math), and required a painstaking 35000 welds to the stainless steel substructure.
