The Moodroom Studio-Workshop in Montreal

Following Moodroom’s success at the Montreal International Interior Design Show, a first concretization of the Moodroom concept has now opened with a studio-workshop in the complexe du canal Lachine in Montreal, Canada.

The “mood” of Moodroom is a scene or staging of the space; a theme which varies with the seasons and is used as a creative base for the product displays. With new arrivals every month, the visual installations and the product shelving is constantly updated by stylists to suggest new combinations or new purposes for each creation.

Harbour House by SJB Architects

SJB Architects have designed this waterfront house in Sydney, Australia.

From the architects:

This contemporary composition of boxes, clad in natural materials and stacked together, opens directly onto Watson’s Bay and a private jetty. The view to the water is oriented to the south, so the timber-clad butterfly roof draws in natural sunlight from the north, allowing the building to maximise both views and light quality. The space of the building is generous and detailed with precision to house an incredible art collection and a large family.

Designer Profile: Roel-Jan Elsinga

Roel-Jan ElsingaRoel-Jan Elsinga is an Amsterdam based designer.

After graduating in 2001 from the Design Academy in Eindhoven, Roel spent the next few years designing websites, making graphics, and doing visualisations and illustrations, but found he had gradually lost touch with the world of interior/product design. However, while doing some web design work for the Dutch design brand Moooi, he became re-inspired to get into interior and product design. Last year, Roel presented his work at the 2008 Tuttobene show in Milan, and has since been working with producers to get his products in stores.

Below are some of his lighting and furniture pieces.

Raffinati Store by Blazys Gérard

The design team of Alexandre Blazys and Benoit Gérard created the ultra-minimalist interior of the Raffinati store, located in Montreal, Canada’s Ogilvy building.

From Blazys Gérard:

The Raffinatti boutique took its conceptual inspiration from the folding and unfolding of the garment. First, a horizontal pliage holds the main garment area and its changing rooms. The second, a vertical intervention holds the second garment area as well as the service point of this high end shop.

The general impact is one of purity. A myriad of whites is used to climate different uses. In fact the serviced and principal circulation is in a glossy finish that allows for a reflection of the user. On the opposite side, the principal shopping area collects a more mat and architectural feel in order to soften the clothing of this line that caters to the female genre. The garments are suspended on sculptural and airy structures leaving the floor of this 600 square foot space empty of any clutter.

The Ziprocker from Zipshape at IMM Cologne 2009

From January 19th to the 25th, the latest results of the Zipshape research will be on display at the 2009 IMM Cologne furnishings show in Germany. The exhibits were developed as a cooperation between the Fachschule für Holztechnik Hamburg (Hamburg school for timber technology) and Swiss manufacturer schindlersalmerón.

One of their latest creations is a cantilevering rocking chair, the Ziprocker, made from walnut and cherry wood.

From schindlersalmerón:

ZipShape is a universal method that makes it possible to fabricate single curved panels from any plain material without molds. An element consists of two individually slotted panels that interlock when bent to the predefined curvature. This system is based on a super intelligent method of making new, completely individual forms out of wood. It is tantamount to developing a new material. It opens up countless opportunities to create something completely new. A real innovation that creates an infinite number of new applications.
