Brooklyn, New York designer Kimberly Manne of Warp Designs, has sent us images of her sculptural stainless steel Flower Containers.

From Warp Designs:

The Warp Floral Container line is a unique concept in floral arranging, designed and patented by Kimberly Manne. Each container is hand-made of stainless steel and can be used to create a variety of looks depending on the flowers or plants chosen.  Trays and cubes can be used alone to plant wheat grass, mosses or display pebbles with air ferns.  Cubes can accommodate orchids, ferns and small Lilies.   When the perforated steel sculptural top is combined with the base, just insert flowers and you have an instant arrangement!  They also can stand alone and unadorned to function as a sculptural element in your design scheme.

Metchosin House by Marko Simcic

Architect Marko Simcic designed this 8300 square foot waterfront house located in the rural district of Metchosin, British Columbia, Canada, which is on the southern end of Vancouver Island.

Although the house is large, Simcic took great care in placing the home on the 67-acre site in order to preserve the existing grove of oak trees.

The building actually consists of two seperate homes, the larger main house is located closer to the ocean, while the guest house is set back inland. Although separated by an exterior space, the two buildings appear as one because of the continuity of the roof plane.

The home is currently for sale through Sotheby’s Realty, view the listing – here.

The Old Dairy by Thomas De Cruz Architects

Thomas De Cruz Architects provided a contemporary design for the remodel of this Victorian home in south-west London.

From Thomas De Cruz:

The Old Dairy in Wandsworth is an example of an unassuming Victorian building that has been transformed into a stunning contemporary home. The rear has been opened up to draw the garden into the house and to flood the previously dingy Victorian interior with an abundance of natural light.

The Edwards Residence by Cutler Anderson Architects

The Seattle, Washington based Cutler Anderson Architects was given a modest budget to design a home for a family of four on a relatively tight, wooded, suburban lot, which is adjacent to a small suburban park. In order to reduce costs, the building was designed to both fit on the land as a single object with a minimum of surface area, and to orient all of the living spaces toward the adjacent park.

Vivian Beer Exhibition at the Wexler Gallery

An exhibition of new work by innovative furniture artist Vivian Beer will be held at the Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia between January 2nd and February 28th, 2009.

An artist who sees her design process as “sophisticated daydreaming,” Vivian Beer creates functional objects that blur the line between contemporary design, craft, and sculpture.  Working primarily with steel, automotive paint, and occasionally wood, Beer is influenced by objects, images, and ideas that celebrate beauty and power.  According to the artist, such objects include flags, clouds, tides, feathers, car fenders, and even corporate logos.  Often anthropomorphic in form, the artist views each of her works as a “creature with a life of its own that can subtly transform the comfortable terrain of the domestic landscape.”

Beer has a BFA from Maine College of Art (2000) and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art (2004).  Her work has exhibited at The Mint Museum, Fuller Craft Museum, SOFA Chicago, Palm Beach 3, and The International Contemporary Furniture Fair.  Beer is currently an artist in residence at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, where she is working on a new body of expressive outdoor objects.

The FLAKE Lamp by Anne Boenisch

German designer Anne Boenisch has designed the FLAKE lamp.

From Anne Boenisch:

FLAKE is inspired by the technology of the manufacturing of styrofoam and plays with the translucid surface of this structure. By switching FLAKE on, the effect is increasing and furthermore shows up the sharp-edged lines of the form. The usual styrofoam, better known in the backgroud of packaging industry turns contrary to his old use into a new direction and creates a new way of moder.

Tank Street Bridge in Brisbane, Australia

The Tank Street pedestrian and bicycle bridge is under construction in Brisbane, Australia. Stretching from the North Quay end of Tank Street in the city to Kurilpa Point in South Brisbane, adjacent to the new Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, the $63.3 million bridge was designed by the Baulderstone, Cox Rayner Architects and ARUP Engineers.

From the Department of Public Works:

Sculptural in appearance, with a network of steel masts seemingly held in suspension by a delicate cross stitching of high wire tensioned cables. The bridge is a multiple-mast, cable-stay structure based on principles of tensegrity, an architectural and engineering system in which the structural integrity is a synergy between balanced tension and compression components. This produces a lightweight yet strong and stable structure. The new bridge presents an artistic array of cables and flying struts recalling the ropes and spars of sailing ships and boats.

The bridge’s completion is scheduled for September 2009, in time for Queensland’s 150th year anniversary celebrations.
