The Wavy Shelf by Sang Hoon Kim

New York based designer Sang Hoon Kim has created the Wavy Shelf.

Kim says:

I would like to express the beautifulness of space division into this work. I gave the geometrically vertical and horizontal divisions to this furniture composed of seemingly unstable curves, in order to make the audiences feel stability from an instable furniture.

Jang Won Yoon at ICFF 2009

At ICFF 2009, we met the Los Angeles based designer Jang Won Yoon, who was exhibiting his Sprint, Janus, and Blade seating. The selected pieces represent an ongoing conversation found within Jang’s designs–the duality of organic form and industrial perfection. Jang uses the combination of sharp angles, high-gloss surfacing, and multi-faceted contours to physically represent this juxtaposition and force the user to understand the contradictory relationship between the two. At once, the pieces seem strong and fierce as well as delicate and alive.

Coast Modern: A Documentary Film

Vancouver, Canada based filmmakers Michael Bernard and Gavin Froome are creating a documentary that will take us on a journey through three generations of modern architecture on the West Coast of North America.

From the early 20th century, through to the second wave of post-war America, to today’s current modernist renaissance. This film speaks with the architects and their patrons, and asks if Modernism’s time has finally come or did it ever really go away.

Firewood Holders by Ak47 Design

Ak47 Design is an Italian company that have produced a collection of firewood holders.

From Ak47:

The current design scene is represented by products that are repetitive, chasing after one another, and all very much alike. The themes they deal with are too often similar, research and innovation are frequently neglected. Hence the intuition of Ak47: to develop designs that shun the obvious, venturing into questions that are still unexplored. The aim is to qualify simple objects; to enhance them and characterise them with the quest for a particular process, the innovative use of materials, the care for details. This is the only way to escape the bonds of fleeting fashion and achieve lasting elegance. The choice of firewood holders, the first theme in the project, was not made at random. We wished to extend our range as much as possible, offering an infinite series of possibilities. Our proposals aim to amaze with unexpected details, almost hidden at first glance.

The Hind House by John Pardey Architects

John Pardey Architects have won an award for architectural excellence in the 2009 RIBA Awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects, for their work on the Hind house.

From the architects:

This house sits on the banks of the river Loddon, near Wargrave. We based our concept on three elements; living, guest and bedroom spaces, to create ‘wings’ that adopt a pinwheel form, raised up on columns to deal with flooding from the river. A dark, zinc-clad wing is pushed forward to receive an entrance staircase that slices up into an open timber lined hood, with a glazed room to the side containing a guest suite and gym. The stair arrives onto a balcony and entrance – a central hall space – this is the day room, dedicated to outdoor living that leads out onto a large deck. Following the zig-zag of the pinwheel, a staircase then leads down to a garden deck, with boardwalk that arrives at a landing stage on the river’s edge. The house is steel framed, with timber stud infill; cedar and zinc-clad, with aluminium framed windows and single-ply roofing.

Salon Mittermeier Facade by X Architekten

X Architekten designed the facade for the Salon Mittermeier in Linz, Austria.

The styling activity of a hairdresser was expressed on the exterior through a three-dimensional wave, a mildly abstract metaphor for the hair styling that takes place inside. The facade serves as both a sign that attracts attention, and as a curtain over the windows to provide a degree of privacy.
