IJburg House by Gabriëls Webb
The Amsterdam based architectural firm of Gabriëls Webb have completed the IJburg House.
This freestanding villa on the new island of IJburg provides for a family to live both independently or together. A lowered children’s level with kitchenette and bathroom can be accessed from the street, while the raised groundfloor provides the communal living zones that proceed to the canal side garden. The upper level contains the parents’ studio space, bedroom and bathroom. The internal levels are demarcated in the facade with white bands and horizontally laid western red cedar boards further striate the volume.

Amazing street, look at all the contemporary architecture!

Agreed, amazing street, but it looks almost like they have some sort or housing code… They all look too much alike, and like too many other homes we’ve seen before.

Im so moving to the netherlands if they got streets like that!

Lance is correct, all houses on the street had to confirm to a volume set in the masterplan. there is of course some leeway, but that is why you see repetition in the streetscape.
we (gabrielswebb) were very happy that we managed to make a house that broke away from the very closed and vertical houses that dominate the street (esp noticable in the last image).

Wow, James. First time personally I’ve seen somone from the firm that worked on a project commenting here.
I really like the idea of independent or together. I think it can go a long way to help families keep their sanity!

The patterned screen is quite beautiful. Who makes the furthest chair back in the third image down?
Rudy on 06 May 2009 at 2:22 pm #
The chair is called Gigi from Label.

James,
Was there a particular price point that most people stuck to? I’m always interested in the WIDE high and low prices I see from various sources pricing out modern homes. I’ve seen stunning for 300K and the same for 500K in the same area. I do agree with you though on the “breaking the mold” comment. I love the front piece of glass on the street side, it’s different without offending anyone, well it wouldn’t offend me anyway.

lance, i can’t speak on behalf of the other houses, but our project sits right in the middle of your prices you listed.

Oh I love it! Very ‘fresh’ looking. But I hope those stairs are strong!
Beautiful house.
