Scrap Lights by Graypants
At ICFF 2009, we met Jonathan Junker, one of the three guys from the Seattle based design studio Graypants, a company they launched a few years ago as a side project and outlet from their day jobs as struggling young architects. They were at the show exhibiting their Scrap Lights, which are a collection of pendant lights made from salvaged pieces of corrugated cardboard.

My only question is: what stops anyone from making their own lamp like this at home? Kind of hard to sell them when they can be made so easily by anyone.

Why are there so many coffee shops when people can just easily make their own?
Why do millions of people buy bottled water every day when water from a tap is free?
The answer to your question is that people are not going to make their own, because:
1. People are lazy.
2. They’re probably not as easy to make as you think.

Good points Susan B. People are lazy, stupid, not very creative, inpatient, etc. Also, people just like to buy. Ebay is a great example of people overpaying & buying dumb things. Anyway, no disrespect to the designers here. It’s great for them if people are willing to buy. For me personally, yes, these are “as easy to make as I think”, but these guys were first to market with it, so they are building a name for themselves. Whereas if I made it, that’d be fine for me, but I wouldn’t try to sell it & take credit. That wouldn’t be fair. All in all, I guess I just enjoy hearing answers to rhetorical questions.
