The Buoy Chair by Evan Dewhirst
At ICFF 2009, we met the designer Evan Dewhirst, who was exhibiting his Buoy Chair.
Evan says:
The Buoy Chair combines simple construction and green manufacturing to create an iconic form. It promotes healthy, ergonomic sitting habits by engaging the user’s stomach and back muscles to provide stability. It also allows great lateral mobility for use at large surfaces while still providing comfort and support. Whether it lives in a classroom, studio, bar, or office, the Buoy Chair is a playful and healthy alternative to current seating options.

I love this innovative design – I wonder though if the chair comes in different heights. Very cool!

That’s a nice design, but wouldn’t the chair keep on sliding though?
Tiesto Albanello on 07 Jun 2009 at 3:20 pm #
The ball on the bottom is rubber. It doesn’t slide when you sit on it. It squishes down a little to absorb your weight.

This design has already been invented by Achille Castiglioni.
Tiesto Albanello on 08 Jun 2009 at 12:04 am #
No, it is not the same design.

lou on 08 Jun 2009 at 6:52 pm #
Very cool, but not practical when seating people of various heights and sizes.

How much? Well, if you have to ask…
You could very easily make one of these at home with a basic understanding of tools and a high school wood shop class under your belt, it just won’t look nearly as cool. It would look like shit actually.

What does it do when youre not sitting on it? Looks like it’d lie on its side.
Tiesto Albanello on 08 Jun 2009 at 7:51 pm #
It’s probably weighted in the bottom of the ball so it stands on its own.

amazing design?? really?!? an uncomfortable and unstable design that barely passes as a stool that they try to sell as “ergonomic” by “engaging your stomach”?? yeah i would love to sit on this thing for 2 hours in class while taking notes on Western Civilization
