The Making of the Armadillo Chair by Aodh O Donnell
By now, many of you have probably seen the Armadillo chair that Aodh O Donnell designed as part of the 2009 Wilsonart Challenge. We discovered O Donnell’s winning chair design as it was prominently displayed at ICFF 2009 in New York, and have noticed it has received much media attention since then. In an effort to make a somewhat original feature on the chair, we asked Aodh for some photos of the process of making the Armadillo chair.

It’s unique, it’s warm, it’s original. it’s organic, it’s orgasmic.
I truly envy, and admire, someone who puts this much of their soul into their craft. I hope he truly succeeds in the design world.

It’s really neat LOOKING, but unfortunately I can’t imagine, as a woman, sitting in it while wearing nylons or any sort of fabric that might pull on the chips when sitting down / getting up / crossing legs, etc. Impractical.

Very creative and innovative design. Chairs are such an interesting topic in design because they tend more toward organic shapes to fit the organic shapes of the human body. As some have commented this might not be the most practical of chair concepts. However, I’d love to see the shingles applied to other organic designs. OR, maybe the way the chips on the seat just need to be another material that would allow the chair to be more functional.
