The Making of the Armadillo Chair by Aodh O Donnell

By now, many of you have probably seen the Armadillo chair that Aodh O Donnell designed as part of the 2009 Wilsonart Challenge. We discovered O Donnell’s winning chair design as it was prominently displayed at ICFF 2009 in New York, and have noticed it has received much media attention since then. In an effort to make a somewhat original feature on the chair, we asked Aodh for some photos of the process of making the Armadillo chair.

Kersplat Coffee Table by James Ian Killinger

James Ian Killinger, a 2008 graduate of Iowa State University’s College of Design, has sent us images of the Kersplat Coffee Table that he created.

James says:

A liquid’s life is an ephemeral one. Its molecular structure determines that its movements are transient and fleeting—chaotic, yet bound by the laws of physics.  There is a simple elegance to the moment liquid collides with a denser surface. I wanted to hold onto that moment a little longer.  Capture it.  Examine it.

Believe it or not, this piece was actually crafted out of poplar wood.  After shaping the individual “splatters tendrils,” they were joined to a base and the piece was finessed further.  Ensuring that each of the four contact splatters were level and even was paramount.  The table was then painted in a high gloss red and topped off by a custom cut piece of glass.

Chorong Lamps by Joongho Choi

Korean designer Joongho Choi has created the Chorong Lamps.

Reinterpreting the ‘chong-sa-chorong’, the korean illumination device, in terms of modern thoughts. This lighting device could be hanged onto fixed metal pole, or held by hand, but most importantly when it was hanged onto a long fixed pole called ‘deung rong deh’, it would vividly show the difference between the wall and the illumination itself, building up tensions in the atmosphere. That tension could be maximized by just hanging on to the supporting pole, and I have brought along the advantageous idea from the ‘chong-sa-chorong’ which is being able to move from place to another in various directions.

The Air Bubble 33 Chair by Guadalupe Velazquez

The Britain based designer Guadalupe Velazquez, has created the Air Bubble 33 Chair.

Guadalupe Velazquez says:

I was inspired by different kinds of insects from the place I grew up, such as ants, and baby wasps when still in the nests. Where I used to play when I was child, there were leaf-cutter ants carrying their food and other colourful objects above their heads, protected by their legs, over the red earth.

The chair is built with futuristic features, using acrylic, leather, steel and perforated aluminium. To make the cushion I used the idea of a banana shape.

The Cafe America Chair by Grain Design

Grain Design, which describes itself as a collaborative of design thinkers that was founded in 2007 at the Rhode Island School of Design, have created the Cafe America chair.

From Grain Design:

Café America is a surprisingly comfortable indoor/outdoor chair. Taking inspiration from ubiquitous chain-link fencing, it recontextualizes the unsung material. A unique cushioning effect is created by the lightly tensioned chain-link seat and back. Café America is made of recycled chain-link whenever possible and flat-packs for efficient shipping and storage.
