You have never seen this in person, so you don’t know that the top wouldn’t be stable enough, and you don’t know that the sofa would be horribly uncomfortable. So how do you know it does two things poorly? Is it necessary to just automatically assume the worst?

I don’t know why you think the table top wouldn’t be stable enough. What do you think it’s going to do, fall off? Did you even notice how the designer made it so that the sofa cushion secures the table top between the backrest and sidearms? That’s what most people would call GOOD DESIGN, because it shows thought, care, and attention to detail.

I question whether you understand the design at all, since, your comment didn’t even mention the main purpose of this furniture, which is to create furniture for small spaces. You should frame your opinion of the design based on what the designer was obviously trying to accomplish. Do you actually think the designer was trying to create the world’s most comfortable sofa? Do you actually think the designer was trying to create the world’s most ideal table?

This is good design, if for no other reason than the fact that it acknowledges the way more and more people live today. In small apartments with efficient utilitarian furniture. It’s also good design just because it’s simple, functional, and would be easy to manufacture, which means it could be very cheap compared to all the super comfortable sofas and ideal tables of the world.

This would also work well as outdoor furniture, where sometimes you might want an extra table, or sometimes you want extra seating.

And no, a couple of saw horses and a sheet of plywood would not work as nicely.
