The Garren Residence by PIQUE

The architects at PIQUE have designed the Garren Residence in Bend, Oregon.

From the architects:

The Garren Residence rests on a high desert prairie site and is a very low-slung building, with strong horizontal elements to visually tie the building to the landscape.

Three parallel axis walls orient the house toward prominent views and define outdoor rooms expanding the small footprint into the landscape. The structure features a central void that further integrates the exterior and interior. This void delivers natural light to the basement rooms as well as provides a private exterior gathering space in the center of the house.

Sofa-Dress by MAEZM Studio

Korean design studio MAEZM have created the Sofa-Dress.

From the designers:

‘sofa-dress’ is a job of space design and a suggestion of furniture design. The act of putting on the clothes of the “sofa” on the existing chair in itself makes the previous object become a little more cushiony furniture and it also can achieve an intention as a unified space with the same cuticles. The ‘sofa-dress’ projects the past objects through the rays of space, which makes a new present without removing the past completely. The black and transparent cuticles reveal the past objects in secret. Its material is the special blowing-type urethane foam and plays a role in screening the rays and simultaneously getting rid of a feeling of weight. Simply beyond the cuticles covering the chair, ‘sofa-dress’ holds an intention of a new-styled design experiment with its own form and mass.

The Scuba Lounge by Brodie Neill

Designer Brodie Neill has created the Scuba lounge for the manufacturer Domodinamica.

With sweeping lines that take inspiration from the aerodynamics of high performance sports cars, Scuba displays a still sense of movement as its contours flow between seat and structure.

The name Scuba refers to the underwater adventure where many graceful species can be witnessed drifting the seas with ease and elegance.  The elevated seat spanning over 2 metres is fringed with the sweeping sides reaching down to the floor like the wings of a manta ray.

Scuba’s self supporting strength is achieved through the ever-undulating curve, bending and coving to provide structure within a 3-dimensional curvilinear surface.  The raised backrest maintains overall rigidity with its concaved cross-section that slowly opens as the swooping lines skim to the floor.

Available in gloss finished lacquer with optional leather cover.

Ubuntu Restaurant by APPARATUS Architecture

APPARATUS Architecture have designed the Ubuntu Restaurant, which occupies a historic 19th century stone building in downtown Napa, California.

The main dining room, bar, and open kitchen occupy the large volume bounded by the original exposed stone walls and timber roof trusses. A second floor mezzanine sits over the enclosed space of the prep kitchen and storage areas.

Materials were chosen for their inherent richness of color and texture, with an eye towards using recycled materials wherever possible. The flooring is a dark mix of salvaged hard woods, the tabletops are reclaimed fir from the Eastman House on the Sacramento River, and the large community table was built with solid slabs of two windfall trees from Occidental, California.

Large custom pendant lights float within the volume of the dining room, while a row of smaller glass fixtures focuses the scale and axis of the central community table.
