R540 Rocking Bench by Fetiche Design
Brazilian designers Carolina Armellini and Paulo Biacchi of Fetiche Design have created the R540 Rocking Bench.
From the designers:
We developed the design of the weft of threads as a “connecting dots” game, looking for a ergonomic radius seating. The result is the 540 milimeters radius (~22 inches). We developed a contemporary product, but with a strong emotional interaction. This kind of threads were part of our childhood in the garden seats of the interior of Brazil. This nostalgic reference is evident in this product.

This is an excellent combination of function and form.
Real thought is required to create a design like this.
I’m impressed with the use of a minimal amount of material to create such a functional design.

really nice take on the woven furniture. Would love to have some of those for outdoors at home. Comfortable, bright colours and nice design.

Won’t make it, sorry, Just looks too cheap.
A fad looking waste of my time, to even consider buying something that looks like it might last two weeks.
It’s so funny looking, I have to laugh when I look at it.

J York, get your mind out of your wallet. If you’re visiting websites that feature design like this and judging everything you see based on its commercial value and whether you would buy it or not, your in the wrong place.
The designs you see on design websites like this are much more about the idea behind the design, then whether or not it’s worth the money or if it will last a million years.
Learn to appreciate the ideas behind the designs. Don’t be so superficial.

Designs like this that use cords under tension always have a great strength to weight ratio. It’s actually the whole basis of the design, it’s very light and simple, yet amazingly strong and durable.
You can probably throw this across the room and not damage it at all.

I wonder if this is inspired by some architecture. I think I’ve seen some roofs of pavillions that use a similar technique.
It’s very nice, and like others have said, it would produce a strong yet light structure.
These would be very portable.

If someone gave you two rings and some cord, could you create anything better than this?
Mr Chicago on 06 Aug 2009 at 8:03 pm #
I agree with the designers description that these have “a strong emotional interaction.” These look really fun.

You know who would really love this? Mathematicians.

I have kids and they fall on their butts all day. They would love this. Me? I don’t know

really very nice, lovely idea, lovely colours, best seat i’ve seen for ages – also not too ’serious’
Sandra McDowell on 07 Aug 2009 at 2:29 am #
This is excellent design, although I would prefer if the cord was made of a more natural material.

That’s really nice… it’s always good to see something that inspires and put a smile on my face! That’s what design is all about… Congratz!

Congratulations for fetiche design.

This chair remember me an old little chair that my father in god gave to me when I was jsut 3 years old. It was pink.
This one is nice, but looks to me not much confortable… I don´t know exactly how to explain this in English. Let me see… “unstable” is the correct word?
Sandra McDowell on 07 Aug 2009 at 3:08 pm #
It’s supposed to be unstable. Things that rock are inherently unstable on purpose.
Mary on 08 Aug 2009 at 6:47 am #
It’s supposed to be unstable, of course,if designers wanted stability would have 4 feet like a chair. relax Fabiana, that’s fun !!
