Truly interesting to see how the contemporary added parts of the building pick up an expression or language, that was not yet present in the generation of the original house – but came to be a lead motif of early American modernism: The cantilevered floors, the block-like massive parts of the interior, the equally block-like bodies of light, created by interior corners, passages and in-betweens. The composition of the exterior volumes and the way they merge, the ornamental relief of the new facades and their formal counterpart in the design of the shallow pond, and so on, everything bears a relaxed but close resemblance to Frank Lloyd Wright, the brothers Green, even Schindler… Modern contemporary but with roots – very American!

This house was on the modern home tour 2009 and I told myself I was going to like it, but not love it. So much for that. This renovation has got to be the most amazing redo of a home I have ever seen. The reflective surface materials combined with all the glass truly do make you feel like you are outside. The floating staircase is brilliant and the dark woods ground the space and honestly look like a tree trunk to me which truly does give the house roots.
