Project description by Stefan Boublil
Combining 3 smaller apartments into one at one of new york city’s most coveted uptown addresses, we delivered a stunning new dwelling on the 61st floor of the metropolitan tower. Every single room is constructed so that the postcard view of central park is the star. With a built-in wraparound sofa, a secret door in the solid walnut library and distributed surround sound all over the home, this project is an ode to the 80s during which the building was erected.
Suited for a family of 4 with 2 children, the communal living spaces stands in between the master suite and the kids’ rooms, hidden behind the aforementioned trap door in the library, thereby providing a buffer of sight and sound.
The kitchen and dining area is the only ones wrapped in waxed concrete thereby giving it a theatrical feel, especially when see from the rest of the apartment which is clad in bleached pine and subdued colors.
I might describe the final result as having a monastery + cowboy ranch + 80s vibe…

I love the huge sofa in the first photo, although I’m not sure where people sit to watch the TV.
The big bookcase is nice, but the TV appears to be mounted off-center in it’s own box, and something like that would bother me every time I looked at it.

All I can say is WOW! That is one of the most amazing apartment designs I’ve ever seen. It begs the question, what’s it valued at? Where’d you get that clear pod chair? Is the wood shelving custom built or where did you order that?

Sorry … but I dont like it. Just not my style.

A very cool place! I like the walnut shelving and storage furniture but agree with Sarah’s remarks about the TV. Hidden behind doors it would be less prominent.
On a more general note I do find the ceiling disappointing. Being dotted with all these spot lights it becomes kind of messy. Personally I prefer the use of floor and wall lamps (with cables hidden) and a virgin ceiling.

Yeah, there’s something about it I like, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. But the majority of the apartment just feels disjointed. The color and type of wood do not really fit in with the place either. But I agree with everyone else on this. It just feels “sloppy” and that tv, ugh, got to go…

While I like several parts of this apartment, I think the huge dark built-ins with that outstanding TV section make the room really unbalanced. Plus, an item I just can’t stand is that cobweb like fixture over the dining table. All in all, to me the redo looks as if several people with different tastes have worked on it.

The one thing that I don’t get is the countless light heads all over the place! I live in a high rise, so I realize that sometimes it’s difficult to use recessed lighting, but then go with a monorail or track system.

those red dining chairs are amazing.

What possesed them to use pine flooring in such an upscale space. no, no, no. We are not in Scandanavia! And that horrible dining room table, apple green bathroom sink and upright piano, again no, no, no.

Overall, a fairly impressive place.
Some of the design choices are trying too hard and look dated.
The TV is awful.

That built-in with the TV is gonna look so dated so fast . . . .

There are things I really like and don’t like in this apt. but one thing that won’t grow old is that damn view!

eeeewwwwwwww yuck. It look slike its been designed by a committee. Nothing seems to be related to anything else. The view is nice though

All I have to say is ick…the bookcases are great if they weren’t in such dark wood ( i love storage!) and certain pieces look nice, but all together it looks like a sloppy mess. Surround sound throughout the apartment sounds nice, I like the kitchen and the 1st bedroom (white) but everything else looks hideous. And what is up with that awful ceiling mural??

TV is awful and in a stupid place.
Why is the bed in the kids room pull down? The space it occupies is useless anyway and when they are older they’ll wish they just had a proper permanent bed.
The lack of continuity with the different types of wood is a bif naff.
Due to there being no shelf at the back of the (nice) green sink you’ll get water all over the glass shelf so you’ll want to clean that constantly or just leave it looking pish.
The ceilings look rubbish.
Don’t get the idea of the electro-reveal glass partition to the bedroom. or the orange light.
Only thing this flat has going for it is the view (wow) and the red chairs…

All I can say is I LOVE the image on the computer monitor in the second picture of the bedroom with blue cabinets. Its hilarious. Otherwise I really just like the bookshelf and the view!

does anyone know the company that makes the glass that changes from opaque to clear between the bedroom and hallway, very interesting product but so far haven’t found the manufacturer

I like everything (including the super pale floors) except the media shelving. To me, they look dated and rather clunky, although I realize they are supposed to look modern. The design is too heavy for the space in my opinion.

I can’t say that the sofa and shelving unit look good at all in the living area. First off, if ‘the view’ is the main focus in this design, why on earth did they close off that corner area with the sofa? The shelving unit – okay, look, I can’t believe that someone got paid to put that there, or anywhere in this apartment. There is absolutely NO logic in the placement of the television. All of the weight is on one side of the space and you’re left with this huge open area. This could be utilized in a much more appealing, and sensible way.
The pine flooring doesn’t really ‘fit’ in this space but if the client’s wanted it, what are you supposed to do?
The smaller bedrooms have a commercial feel for me and the one with the fold away bed just doesn’t make sense.
The dining room is a nice space. The light fixture and chairs add a sense of whimsy. The red really pops. I’m fond of the shelving around the piano as well. The bathroom is nice and I do really like the green sink, although there isn’t anything that ties to the green at all, making it seem a bit out of place.
The mural looks really interesting as a reflection in the bathroom mirror, but the picture itself seems tacky.

I like how most of the seating is set to be right next to the windows. Brings slightly new meanings to window seating vs sofas
I actually don’t mind the TV where it is now, adjacent to the seating. I’d rather settle myself comfortably into the innermost of the green seating near the window ona good day and read a book in that little enclave. Then while I’m cooking maybe have the TV on to listen to the news. I also like the the compartments surrounding the TV – it encourages me to leave things that i wouldn’t know where else to put. The compartments would be a good place for me to put my keys for example – since I lose them so easily.
With regards to the bathroom ceiling – At first I didnt like it, I thought it looked tacky. But then I thought about the rest of the rooms. The color schemes of the other rooms – and the rooms in general are very nice – but overall are very desaturated. Having a splash (pun intended) of color here and there nicely offsets the desaturated colors. I noticed that these splashes of color are placed throughout the home – the red dining room chairs, the green bathroom sink, the nice warm gold glow of the painting…. I wish there was a pattern to the placement of these bright colors – but I can’t see one. But that’s okay.
I also like the shelves on the wall surrounding the piano. The horizontal lines I think would help me to focus as I play the piano.
Another clever thing I really like is the head board of the master bed, which on the other side of the wall the board rests upon serves as a holder of degrees, awards photos, and what have you.
In general – the combination of colors, wood grain patterns and arrangements used would suit me perfectly if I were to live here. I love it! I think the Apartment Creative Agency did a great job. There are a lot of details I think they did an excellent job of.

Good job, that chandelier is sweet above dinner table, it so voluminous, and it uses space wonderfully. The tiger and eagle death match on bathroom ceiling is hilarious.
