using a coil of wire to carry an electrical current while coiled is a fire hazard. Under 'normal' load, which is not a huge amount for this little lightbulb, you will still get a build up of heat with the potential, over time of a fire. The problem could be exaserbated when something else happens like a power surge, bulb failure, kink in the wire, etc, etc. Depending on the rating of the cable you might also find it will not trip a circuit breaker or blow a fuse under fault conditions. Intereting to find out if this design has passed electrical safety testing.

This is AC current, so you don't have to worry about the electromagnetism. Also, have yous een this?

Very similar idea to Coil Lamp, a project I designed in 2008. http://craightonberman.com/coil.html My focus was on DIY-- the wire frame is an interesting angle.

Extension cords have wires the ensure current flows in opposite directions to prevent this: http://community.discovery.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/7501919888/m/6881964889?r=4251994889#4251994889

And, by the way, LOVE this design.

amen Dan.

a coworker who was an ex-electrician told of coiling an extension cord, plugging in a saw, and turning it on as someone passed and "sucking a pair of pliers right out of his pocket". exaggeration; probably. good story.

But it's soooooo cute! Oh well, at least when you get a tumor the size of a golfball you'll have enough cord to hang yourself with. Decorative and functional, love it!

Running current through a coiled cable is a bad idea, it turns it into a huge pulsing electromagnet and that is not good for your health, or safety.
