Piet Fireplace by Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius
Swedish designer Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius has created the Piet fireplace.
From the designer:
Piet is a chimney free indoor stove with a brass reflector, that burns ethanol fuel instead of wood. This gives no smoke or soot and thereby eliminates the need of a chimney.
A layer of rockwool fire insulation between the reflector and the outer shell keeps the outside cool. This means that you can always touch the ceramic body of Piet without burning your hand and also means that Piet can be placed closer to walls or other furniture.
Since it doesn’t require any permanent installation you can just bring it with along when you move or place it wherever you like when you refurnish.
The name is a tribute to Danish architect and mathematician Piet Hein since the stove has the form of a super elliptic egg.

Produces no smoke or soot… what about carbon dioxide (CO2) and -even more dangerous- carbon monoxide (CO)
Has the designer ever considered this intoxication hazard?
What about the danger of the fireplace being accidentally hit by a person, dog, etc. and tipping over while burning?
This fireplace is quite beautiful and decorative, but extremely dangerous!!!

This is AMAZING. As Fall gets nearer, all I want is a cozy and design savvy fireplace!

My Mom told me never to run with scissors or talk to strangers, but she didn’t say anything about ethanol-burning mobile hearths. I like it!

Nicolas those style of fires are already out on the market without any safety concerns with emissions etc. The knocking over aspect is a bit of a concern so to get around it just invite friends over who are co ordinated and you’ll be fine

Right, at least should carry a disclaimer to always ensure adequate ventilation and never go to bed with the stove on… for this and any similar devices as well.
Design, aesthetics should never be more important than safety and functionality.

I would like to purchase one, and also have questions along the line of emissions. The unit is so graceful and organic, I love the bright color and the fact that the fire would be enhanced by the chamber.

It’s like a big egg with a yoke… Biomimicry?

It is beautiful and a wonderful idea, but Carl: biomimicry is not just about aesthetic but also about functionality. how would the function of this item equal that of an egg?

It is a totally original take on a fireplace! I’ve seen some of the other ethanol designs, but this one is so beautifully shaped and original! Guess I’ll check his site to see other details, such as how large a room it heats. Great how the brass interior adds to the reflectivity and ambience of the fire. I am in love with the compact design and the shape!
Although I do love the wooden feet, now that someone has mentioned it, I’d like to know how stable it is.

I would be afraid my cat would jump in it!

Sigh! So ugly …
If one can’t have a real perfumed wood fire, better go for a heather.

I love the idea of these heaters but the only problem is you need to leave a door or window open for ventilation, thus negating any benefit from the heat generated. So as a beautiful feature to look at it works, but as a heater……
