The Tree House by KAA Design Group

Another house that will be part of the Fall Home Tour put on by the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects is the Tree House by KAA Design Group.

Located in the desirable “tree section” of Manhattan Beach, this home reinforces the viability of indoor/outdoor living along the Southern California coast. Locally sourced sustainable materials are, whenever possible and relevant to the design concept, left exposed to reveal their natural finishes.

The Tree House’s combination of wood, concrete and glass creates a nurturing aesthetic that feels as warm and familiar as it does forward and modern. The Modernist attention to detail is expressed throughout with hidden heating and cooling functions built in to allow for natural ventilation.

Unnamed Fire Pit from Solus Decor

Solus Decor, a Vancouver, Canada based producer of cast concrete products, have created a new fire pit. The 36″ x 36″ x 8″ tall slab of concrete is currently in the testing phase for an official launch early next year, and so far they don’t have a name for it, so they’ve created a contest asking people to submit names, and the person with the winning entry will also win their very own fire pit.

To enter: Go to the Solus Decor facebook page, become a fan (if you are not already one), and post your name idea on their wall. Then sit back, view other people’s suggestions, add comments, and on January 5, 2010, they will decide the winner.

Visit the Solus Decor Facebook page – here.

Note: Contest is open to residents of Canada and the continental United States.

The Motley III Collection by Samuel Chan for Channels

British design firm Channels is set to launch its latest collection of furniture and lighting – Motley III – at 100% Design in London, September 24th-27th.

As a follow-on to the award-winning Motley II collection launched last September, Motley III is a series of ten new furniture and lighting designs by Samuel Chan for Channels.

The series explores new geometric and organic forms and reflects Samuel’s signature purist style. Inherent in his approach is an ability to understand the ongoing potential of wood in new design. His work presents wood in a bold and simple way that requires no further embellishment. The designs demand the most exacting hand-finished craft while introducing new manufacturing processes – so giving this most traditional of materials a strong contemporary expression.

The LENA Light by Christian Strauss

German designer Christian Strauss has created the LENA light.

From the designer:

LENA is a leaning light made of aluminium round pipe. The lamp has a finishing of liquid gum, resulting thereby a very pleasant haptics and matt black optics. A tilt angle contactor provides for the on/off switch inside of the lamp and it underlines the gesture of the leaning perfectly; the quicksilver inside of the tilt angle contactor inclines when the lamp is leaned on the wall or the furniture and merges thereby two contact parts providing smooth current flow. Therefore supplies LENA with direct or diffuse light only in leaned position.
