PRACTICALITIES
VERBOTEN –angularity in tap fittings, tap fittings that are obtrusive and that cannot be swung out of the way, very angular internal surfaces in baths and sinks, towels hanging in splash zones, deep, narrow crevices under/between/behind immovable objects, vast, shallow sinks (unless accompanied by smaller deeper ones), toilet in the same airspace as bath/shower (on pain of death), toilet with transparent walls (what the hell were you thinking?), dearth of useful surfaces beside mirrors/sinks/baths, floor without drainage- you need to be able to splash around, have rough seas in the bath and spill half the water and not have to mop it all up again (if water conservation is a priority, lose the bath altogether).
Surfaces should be curvy and accessible for ease of cleaning, and it would be preferable not to have to bring a clothes horse into the bathroom, or be reduced to chucking towels over the bedroom door or the balustrade to dry. God forbid anyone should use a dryer unless one powered by sun, wind or sea.
ESSENTIALS
A bathroom should be a room in which the soul is set free. It should be a transcendent space with distances so that even the ocular muscles can extend and relax- especially where there is a bath, in which long periods of time may be spent in contemplation. So the big generous spaces and soaring ceilings in these pictures are great, and the huge windows. The total saturation, or minimalistic absence, of colour is inspiring. Huge chandeliers and towering light and shade or artwork add to the drama. Some of the shapes in the pics are wondrously graceful, a quality essential in the room in which the most elegantly fluid of all substances (with the possible exception of mercury) is the prime element.

Almost all the bathroom sink counters and the bathroom drawers appear cantilevered, they appear to be floatiing. This is a look that I love: it makes a space look modern and airy, and it’s easy to clean under it. I especially love the top bathroom. I love the tub with the wooden surround.

I meant to add, though, that I could never live as clean & minimalistic as depicted here. Where is the liquid soap or bar soap, for instance? Toothbrushes in holder? And where does one store shampoos, conditioners & towels near the tub? Some things, many things, are stored out of view… but I like to have things regularly used close at hand.
That being said, while these bathrooms may not be practical for many people’s lifestyles… they are beautiful and simple.

Amazing photos of some beautiful bathroom designs. Sandy, there’s soap and toothbrushes in nearly every photograph, these are practical designs as far as I can tell, and probably even real homes.
