The YAS Hotel and the World’s Largest LED Project is Complete
The YAS Hotel in Abu Dhabi was recently completed, and its curvilinear grid-shell which is covered with over 5,300 diamond-shaped steel panels, containing nearly 5000 LED fixtures is being announced as the world’s largest LED project controlled through RDM (Remote Device Management).
New York based lighting designers Arup Lighting worked with Germany based e:cue lighting control to create lighting effects such as color-changing light sequences, and to play customized three dimensional low-resolution video content, on the grid-shell.
The building was designed by Asymptote Architecture, we previously featured the Yas Hotel back in May, click here to read that post.

Real cool design/concept. Saw a post on this a while ago before it had completed construction. But personally, would you want bright purple light gleaming through your windows at night? I would find that quite annoying.

the V like supports for the skin are so awful, they really ruin the whole thing for me.
i do like the whale like shape of it though.

Maintenance is going to be more fun that a barrel of monkeys. It appears they’ve already got some light segments not functioning.

That’s a lot of LEDs. I wonder how much their electricity bill will be?

I think its brilliant the way it feels like an alien takeover on some building in the middle of nowhere. Im sure that whoever lives in this hotel is less concerned about some purple light in ther window and more about being apart of something so beautiful. Besides im sure the design team thought of the obvious.

it is a good idea but i do think that the lighting needs improvement i see too much of that blue pink purple combination but overall it seems a little gaudy but is okay..

And what about having a nice view of the city lights at night…not bloody likely mate…just purple haze.

It looks great, but check out the National Pop and Rock centre “ROCKHEIM” in Trondheim, Norway, by Pir II Arkitektkontor. Just finished, with 11.700 LED fixtures on the facade, each one controlled separately. And in day-time, it’s completely different, covered by album-cover graphics in white, printed on iron-free glass panels. We’re proud of it…
