BUMPS Building by Sako Architects
Sako Architects have designed the BUMPS building complex in Beijing, China.
The complex is a mixed-use residential and commercial development, which will be a landmark that leads to further development in the surrounding area of the city.
The building is characterized by it’s constant variation between the different levels. Every two floors are set as a unit, and every unit is staggered by 2 metres horizontally, with the resulting set-back areas being used for terraces.

Feels like an intoxicated shipping-container-loader stacked it up.

Encore une espèce de verrue au milieux de la ville, pas vraiment intégré et au look de container empilés….

PGodart “Au look de container empilés…” Vraiment? Je l’aime.
It reminds me of Lego blocks as well, but in a good kind of way. It’s doesn’t have that “normal” architectural appearance, but it blends in well with the site.

Interesting distrubution pattern of the units, to allow space for the terraces.

interesting, but if i’m correct, not totally original. something like this was done in Canada in the 60/70′s

I think this is a horrible project. It reminds me a lot of a similar building we have here in Madrid and I must admit it does not play well along with it surroundings.
From my point of view, architects should never forget about it visual impact once the building is in place.
For me this project is visually contaminating.

Looks like an Extreme Free Runner’s dream come true. You’re defiantly going to get some young punks climbing all over it.

Too good to be true
I like it a lot!

I must agree with Irene. I am not a fan of this project. Although as a graphic statement on the screen it has an impact, thinking of this as a residence or place of work somehow stresses me out.
As Andy mentioned, this projects resembles Habitat67 in Montreal
(http://www.e-architect.co.uk/montreal/jpgs/habitat_67_moshe_safdie_ms270309_th_1.jpg)
however i felt when i visited habitat 67 that it has a way more studied arrangement, the scale is much easier to take in and the movement is somehow organic. This project feels a bit insulting to any natural environment, even an urban environment

ol, thats what exactly i thought at first, too.

I have to say I don’t like this project! Weird but not in a beautiful way.
P.S. why do you delete people’s comment?

I’ve seen the Habitat67 and the Nakagin capsule tower.
I feel that the project is unique in its idea and the usage of extra space as terrace. However, it does not blend to the environment as well as the other two projects are.
The habitat67 are built in smaller scale and the brown coloured building blends naturally to the surrounding, while the Nakagin are surrounded by the high rise building, which makes it stands out, but not out of place.
Maybe it is the usage of black and white in this project, maybe it’s too much contrast, or maybe it is just because it stands out too much, that it become a bit disturbing.
I don’t know whether to like the overall product or feel disturbed, but i absolutely love the idea behind it.

I can see the resemblance to habitat67. Somehow this project gives off a feel of tenement housing?
But it’s still an interesting look & feel. But what would it look like when other structures go up around them?

Looks very robotic. Fitting for a nation of corporate robots.

it’s all a bit of a mess to be honest.
Charles Correa did a far better interpretation of this theme with his Kanchanjunga Apartments in Bombay (1983)
