The Square House by MODO Architecture & Design
SITUATION: MENORCA, SPAIN
AREA: 180 Sqm
TEAM: MODO, Arquitectura y Diseño
ARCHITECTS: Christian Sintes, David Dominguez
This small project (180 sqm) is located near the seaside, in an urbanization on the northface of the port of Mahon, in Menorca.
The area is very quite, caracterized by the existence of several isolated houses mainly composed by the intersection of cubic blocks.
As the site is situated between two houses, the aim of the project was to create an introverted house regarding to the neighbours, and outgoing to the main views to the seaside. It appears as a compact geometry, in contrast to the unlucky catalog of formal solutions of the surrounding neighbours.
The house is mainly closed on its north facade, and open wide to the south orientation, it appears as a massive compact object, perforated by a “great eye”, framing the interesting views.
The program is divided in two floors regarding to the existing strong slope of the site. The main entrance and sleeping area are on the first floor, while the living room and the kitchen are situated on the ground level. The kitchen is conceived to cook looking at the sea, this idea is reinforced by the use of the same floor natural stone in the interior and exterior areas.
The exterior area is divided by different slopes, creating intimate or open areas as needed.
Regarding to the native architectural tradition, we used “ White“ as the main material (and not as a colour) for the whole solution.

Lovely. I might like it even more if the wood on the facade faded a bit to a silvery grey.

Great view, great pool, great looking couch. Still scared of white kitchens though.

beautiful design/layout, but yet again, what’s with the white-on-white-on-white sterile living? You’d think it was a hospital of some sorts, it’s actually kind of painful to not have any color or life. The wood accents are nice, but it’s far from enough…

beautiful. love the accents of natural wood throughout.

Great exterior view, with the pool area, but i think they over did it with the white interior. Also in the living/dinig area, the lack of a proper window is a bit claustrophobic.(but i love the house)

Nice. Its very clean and a nice empty shell. Easy to decorate with just about anything. Less is more I guess.

Why not have a more windows?

I like the pool area. Only sun-drenched places like Menorca, Greece, etc. can get away with that much dark wood.

I don’t like the fact that an occupant on the second floor is denied a view of the pool

I think it would be to depresive that way. It’s really nice.

Scout, the occupants of the second floor have some pretty views of the sea and the natural harbour of Mahon, that’s why this house is 45º rotated… I’m the photographer of these photos.
