The Abachus Table by Dirk Wynants of Extremis
Dirk Wynants, the founder of the Belgian manufacturer Extremis, has designed the Abachus table.
From Extremis:
Abachus is a high table with a little extra: while standing, you can lean against one of its six arms, providing the minimal comfort you need to honor Bacchus with friends. The optional integrated ashtray prevents the floor to become one.
The Abachus table is shown here with InUmbrina, a new parasol from Extremis that is perfect to use with the Abachus table, but it can also stand alone on its own.

In plan it almost looks like the hazardous warning logo. I like the form.

Love this. Great ideas and excellent choice of materials. Nice work Dirk.

It’s a cool concept, except, I’m sure it doesn’t look real good with 100 cigarette butts sticking out of the ashtray! I know it’s optional, but the inclusion of an ashtray is completely unnecessary. Last thing the world needs is a table that makes smokers think they are cooler than they already think they are.

PinballLes, the option to include an ashtray makes perfect sense if you think about who would be some of the biggest buyers of this product: Bars and Pubs.
The inclusion of an ashtray is smart design.
Saying that it’s “completely unnecessary” is just wrong, especially since it’s optional.
…and no, I am not a smoker.

Do they not like to sit down in Belgium? This sort of design seems to discourage getting comfortable, but may be ideal for an area frequented by people with little time – like a train station. Still, I prefer to sit (on something other than a pole) when I’m drinking and smoking.

Many bars and pubs have tables with no option to sit at all.
This design does NOT discourage getting comfortable, since it is MORE comfortable than simply having a table where people are forced to just stand.

Agree with Dan. It will be great for public places, where people may not want/need to sit down. I don’t like the ashtray though. Maybe I just don’t like people smoking.. Other than that, it’s a cool design.

Looks like it could be dangerous for men/women walking up to the table in the dark and not seeing the seat at crotch level. I think that maybe some sort of LED indicators could get introduced to reduce the crotch attacking feature. Just a thought.
