Brrr……….. Brrrr……..
cold as ice!
Tina (from Sydney) on 27 Feb 2010 at 9:49 pm #
I love the take on the Juliette balcony.
Some warmth would have been nice though – icy outside and inside.

very good interiors. The use of white makes a small apartment look big.The designer has kept the detailing to a minimum with more emphasis on planning this small space. The sliding glass doors between the bedroom and the living area is a smart idea though I think the knob handles for sliding seem to be missing.Good job overall

beautiful details and clean finishes but as they said it’s very cold especially outside is freezing , maybe better to have it warm inside not icy.

I agree with Tina, the solution is well done, but some warm color would be fine for this interior!

I really enjoy those comments and Dipa is getting it!! This is very small appartment (was 48 m2, but with the glass balcony and including the other at backside it is now 52 m2) The white colour is of course as Dipa says in order to make the appartment larger. The same intention with the detailing and open solutions. The sliding doors are acrylic and function extremely well (with small holes to operate instead of handles:)
If somebody would like to se the plan (before and after) I would be happy to send those.
The colour beeing white (beyond the issue of enlargement needs) is, I presume, as well a matter of character, temparament and whish by myself and as long as I enjoy it, it satisfies my need and pleasure,, and of course this is ICE land

What is the print on the wall in picture number 10?
Jacynthe Ducharme on 28 Feb 2010 at 12:34 pm #
Mr Jonsson is right, the color for this kind of appartment is just perfect, and yes, he lives in ICEland! (anyway, what gives warmth to a space is the people who live there)
I think it is a really good interior design+detailing solutions for a small space.
Nice.

I absolutely love the interplay of the planes/layers, especially the effect in the ceiling where they have the appearance of “floating”. As mentioned above in regard to the small space, the effect subconciously sets an effect of “more space” beyond what is initially apparent. Very effective, and to find tradesmen who can execute that detailing so deftly….it just adds so much. One question; what is the function of the column at the counter?

I lived in Iceland from 2005-2006, and was always very impressed with how tastefully the original and modern architecture were integrated.
Your apartment has a prime view of Hallgrímskirkja (pic opens in new window). I took this picture in 2006 a few days before I came back to the States. You can see the building your apartment is in at the very front, second from the right.
Excellent remodel!

Gudmunder I would definitely like to see the before and after plans of this space.
HICHAM on 01 Mar 2010 at 11:51 pm #
no doubt about the design, details and solutions, and regarding the color also for the small appartment light color is also good , i support JACYNTHE saying “what gives warmth to a space is the people who live there”

i think the balcony was a terrible idea. it looks abhorrent, clashing with the surrounding ones.

If you have ever been to Reykjavik, you will understand the architect’s vision with this space. No need for too much color…the landscape is like no other on Planet Earth.

Dear Somerled,
You really understand,,, you must be an artist being able to understand the idea behind the apartment,, great

How cool and clean, the flavour and taste now have the free space to fill the room, together with the people who will be present to bring colour and enjoy, very well done

The room does look bigger than 52m2, I actually love the idea of using white to enlarge the feeling of space. How ever the metal edges are what makes the room icy cold.

Love the cool, icy feeling. Leaving the interiors white, gives an effect of bringing the outside in. It really does make the space seem so much bigger than it is.

A truly wonderful reworking of a small space, Gudmundur…details are beautiful. It is great to see someone apply such creativity to a small space…this project reflects/applies more to how most of us live than 90% of the dwellings featured here (which I mostly admire regardless) and I think underlines that often the confines of limited space produce better design than large spaces.
I recently completed furnishing a 46 square meter space and set environmental limitations on myself as well, due to the fact that the apartment was brand new…therefore no renovation, just accept what the developer had presented and then furnish! The limitation of space means each detail and piece of furniture is considered with much greater depth.
On a side note…I am always somewhat baffled by people who post negative comments on a site such as ‘Contemporist’ along the lines of…colourless, souless, too stark etc etc .While I am not saying that every visitor needs to be a fan of brutal minimalism…they by and large seem to be missing the point of what the site represents. As for the frequent ‘needs colour’ remark, white is the reflection of the full colour spectrum and black the absorption…

Lovely! I’ve always loved small tiny apartments and it doesn’t have to be on a super high rise. This would do great for a 2-person!
The other thing I love about this apartment is that, it looks totally different from other units or perhaps even the whole building, which is probably why it caught my eyes. Great job!
P/s: Love the bathroom and the balcony!
