wow! spectacular.

I saw the first photo and thought, “Wow! What a view!” But then I started stepping through each photo. Ok, not bad, but a little busy… Wait, the kitchen is horrible… The bathroom is really nice, but why is the toilet so close to the tub in a house this large? The house does nothing, interior wise that is, but fight with it’s surroundings. The more and more I studied the photos the more it all made sense when I saw the green “lawn” next to it. It’s ends up being a Vegas nightmare in the end. But I wouldn’t blame the architects for this one as I’m sure the client had very strong “design” ideas.

Not really sure what this house is doing on Contemporist. Just looks like a suburban luxury monster home. Great landscaping, though.

CONTEMPORIST features contemporary design, and this house certainly has elements of contemporary design.

This house is completely OTT. But strangely enough, I like it lol…

Love the view. hate the kitchen!

The exterior of this home is warm and pleasing. I like the way it comfortably fits in with its surroundings and has a subtle contemporary appeal. The interior looks like separate booths from a home and garden show all competing with each other for the attention of whomever is passing by shopping for “the latest thing.” It is apparent these shoppers could’nt say no to anything.

Yes the kitchen is truly awful.

I’m with Lance on this one….the more I studied the photos, the less I like. Beautiful materials and landscaping, some nice spaces, but an obvious heavy hand. As my first boss drove into my head again and again, “KISS, KISS, KISS” (Keep It Simple Stupid). And as others have mentioned, the kitchen! It looks like it was a “plug-in” brought in after the fact. Poorly integrated.

I love the living room and the area with the cactuses.
Excellent!

Rectangles within rectangles within rectangles, superimposed upon rectangles- and then outside, that incongruously conventional-looking pitched roof. Stone, wood, gardens inside- but look up and you have plaster ceilings with downlights. It is not honest. Not the kitchen, which is too small to properly service such a large house. Neither is the furniture, some of which looks almost tortuous… the TVs- their numbers, sizes and positions; how embarrassing. I wonder how much conversation there is over breakfast, or anywhere, in this house.
There are cluttered details everywhere, too many changes in materials across surfaces, stairs where none are needed, where continuity would have been more harmonious. Vacuuming the pebbles will be fun ? Pity the cleaners. Strange having the closets opening out of the bathroom… do these people dress on the cold stone floor in the dampest room?
The kindest that can be said is that this is another case of a design that should have been longer in the gestation to allow it to be seen clearly and edited into a more essential form.

i agree with lance and jimw. good grief!!!!! wtf!!!!!! way too much going on here. good reminder jimw, “KISS”. people also need to remember less is more. simple beauty goes a long way more than extravagant layout and design.

the type of the house i would expect to see reviewed in Architectural Digest, not on contemporist.
Susan on 05 May 2010 at 10:28 am #
I wish contemporist would feature more houses like this.

I really like the interiors (except for the kitchen). I would have preferred a flat roof, but overall it’s nice.
Ken on 05 May 2010 at 5:24 pm #
A different choice of materials would make the kitchen look much better. Go to your local home depot and pick up a few cans of dark cherry spray varnish. That should do the trick.

The best feature are the roofs evoking the hills. Otherwise, well, it IS on a golf course. I wonder if this edifice belongs to that car dealer by the same name: it would make sense.

I like the house… It has a soothing aura that comes with it… The location is perfectly matched with the house’s design. But I agree with why was the toilet near the tub with a house so big and large as that. But I still like it. It’s a good designall in all.
