Ionic Bench by Laurie Beckerman
New York-based designer Laurie Beckerman has created the Ionic Bench.
Laurie says:
It’s inspired by the capital of an Ionic column. Instead of the look of dense stone, I wanted to extract the lines of the form to create a light, spacious and resilient bench in which a person sits in the middle — framed on either side by two big luxurious scrolls.
Made from 1″ thick Baltic birch plywood, the bench’s profile is cut out 18 times with the use of CNC technology. The slices are laminated together for a strong, curvaceous form. The surfaces that reveal the plies are finely sanded, and coated with a high-quality Italian acrylic; the result is a seat that is sensuously smooth to the touch.

This is a great accessory addition for all those die hard post-modernists.

there must be a lot of waste in the manufacture

g- you are so right. if this shape was cnc’d in one single piece then you are right. if they cut it in small curve shapes and then pieced it together it would use a lot less material but take more time in the manufacture…but i doubt they went that route.

I’m Laurie. Thank you all for your kind comments. Just wanted to clarify that I did consider the value of the material. It is possible with CNC to cut the whole profile. But to conserve the material, only the front and back are cut through completely but the inner ones are in pieces. You can see the seams on top.

I had the honor of sitting on the bench when it was on display in NY for the design show at the Jacob Javits Center, and it is a gorgeous piece. It has the clean lines of modern design but a shape that pays homage to the classics.
