Pipeline Seating by Harry Allen for Dune
American designer Harry Allen has created the Pipeline seating for Dune.

Description from Dune:
Harry Allen’s Pipeline design is a brilliant solution to the challenging seating requirements that any public space may require. It consists of four upholstered pipe-shaped components that when combined can create endless configurations of group-seating. There is a 4’ pipe, a cross connector, t-connector and elbow that also curves up to become a table with a recessed wood top. These parts join together with the leg or wall mounted supports which enable Pipeline to continue on infinite directions and shapes. The pipe parts are upholstered with polyurethane foam over an MDF and solid wood frame. The legs are in polished aluminum.

Back in the 70′s there were installations of “tube” seating. Those installations were metal and not cushioned, however sitting on “tubes” is some of the most uncomfortable seating on the planet. Aesthetically…they can be cool in the appropriate design(these however look like duct work sitting on the floor), but ergonomically they are brutal.

Beautiful tube) But is it comfortable to sit?

I have a feeling you straddle it.

A agree with Jimw. Tubing NEVER works with seating whether you sit in it traditionally or straddle it.
But it could look visually attractive as a corporate foyer statement piece.

Following the other coments I’d really like to see photos of this seating with people actually sitting on them! I mean, who knows? Maybe by using a clever mix of soft and hard foam they might turn into something more ergonomical?

Just looks like sheetmetal for heating/cooling and i think it takes up too much space. if they made grooves or something it would be more functional.

if they wer the actual ducting for the building but altered to work as seating that would be something……something i would definately straddle.

Maybe its not that comfortable, but the visual effect is undenyable!
