The Library Resort in Koh Samui
The Library is a resort in Koh Samui, Thailand, where designer Tirawan Songsawat created a minimalist structure while intruding as little as possible on the site by building around old-growth trees. Guests may lose themselves among vegetation interspersed with artwork and statuary, contrasting a colour scheme in which white, red, black and grey predominate: the Library’s exterior is white, the swimming pool red, the restaurant grey. Interiors follow the same ultra minimalist palette and feature low-slung, rectilinear furnishings that invite visitors to stretch out and listen to the lapping of the waves – or of course dive into the books in the exemplary namesake library.

Project description:
‘An Exotic Smart Concept’ is a conclusion of our project design. Semi-minimalist architecture is our solution as it provides a very simple architecture and interior which has a balance with surrounding nature. To complement with architecture style, a smart interactive between staff and guests is added up to ensure that the right combination of both facilities and staff will create a perfect blend of the project.
As for atmosphere within the Project, we set a tone of feeling to be a cool smart-relaxing place with attractive appearance and interesting theme. Green from grass in our garden decorated with art pieces and sculptures will be key element for our landscape. White theme of the building by the beach, a vivid red swimming pool overlooking to the sea and grey tone of the Restaurant – these are visualized overview concept of the Project.
Highlight of the project is ‘The Library Building’ located by the beach named itself after the project’s title. The White building with high huge ceiling equipped with glass window pane all around will enrich purity, serenity and peace.
The Library Building consists of three box-style units adjoining together where the middle box is an open-air serving as a mini-café. The other two boxes are the huge library for not only books but also other entertainment media such as music CD, movie DVD. In addition, there will be a small corner for internet access with broadband connection. Guests will enjoy sipping a cup of coffee, writing e-mail, listening to music with sea views.
Accommodation concept is to divide space equally between outdoor and indoor in both horizontal and vertical way. This idea was stemmed from simple concept that when holiday, people prefer to spend more time out in the open rather than staying in an air-conditioned box.
Consequently, each building unit will be built in a box style by emphasizing in increasing efficiency of space utilization vertically and horizontally. We provide more outdoor and open-air space in order to meet guests’ preference.

Wonderful concept!
The red pool is unwelcoming.

Fantastic! But i’m skeptical about the red tiled pool. Mentally i’ll feel like i’m swimming in blood water, arghh.

Many aspects of this design I like…there is a transcendental attitude in many of the images. However, and not intending to be repetitive with the prior comments, the red pool is incredibly disconcerting.

This is an original resort. Using a “library” and the “reading” concept is very smart. The execution is very well done, so I guess that the red pool is just an error, maybe the were thinking more on a color scheme (looking at some furniture in the rooms they use red as contrast) and were not considering the nasty “blood” effect with the water. They should think in changing that color, from my point of view, all the relaxing mood and serenity is completely lost with the pool.

The red pool couldnt be more contemporary, it’s got Vampire written all over it.

I love the red pool. I have never seen a pool any other color then blue/aqua. I think it’s a very creative idea. It opens up a whole world of possibilities, purple pool, orange pool, pink pool.

I just can’t get past that truly hideous red pool.
It is a seriously poorly chosen colour.

Great concept, great design, and I have to say, that red pool is amazing. It is very creative and I think we’ll see a lot more unusual pool colours from here on end.

I couldn’t agree more about the red pool. In fact, I came to the website from the newsletter specifically to comment about it.
Although I can understand the association of “red” with “read”, it’s a truly horrible color for a swimming pool. There’s no way I’d go to this resort just because of that.

Phillipp Starck is also using red pool at Yamu, Phuket. It’s very contemporary, I like it so much, but it is divisive for sure. This is a great design hotel, one of my favourite on the island. By the way, they are extending now. Looking forward to the phase2.
