Summer House Vestfold by Jarmund/Vigsnæs AS Architects
Jarmund/Vigsnæs AS Architects have designed a summer house in Vestfold, Norway.

.
Description from the architects:
The Summer house is located on the coast of Vestfold in the southern part of Norway.
The house replaces an older building at the site. To get the planning permit, the project had to be well adjusted to the terrain, both in terms of shape, scale, material and color. The house and terraces are partly built upon existing stone walls, the parts of the walls which are new are made of stones from the blasting at the site.
The low elongated volume is cut into to allow for wind shielded outdoor areas, embraced by the house itself. These cuts also bring down the scale of the building, and together with the local variations of the section, make the building relate to the surrounding cliff formations. On the outer perimeter of terraces and pool, a glass fence also protects against wind, but allows for maximum view. The house is clad with Kebony wood, a sustainable process of treating the wood to allow for good durability towards the exposure to salt water.

This is a beautifully considered site response; allowing a striking modern building to be built into a treasured site, rather than imposing itself onto it. The timber screened roof enables the building to recede nicely from above. The Kebony treated Nordic pine is an inspired use of local resources, and left to silver off like driftwood, makes the building look like a found piece of art rather than a contrived effort.
Well done, very well done.

A-cero take note. You can create signature architecture without totally overwhelming the piece of land that’s being built on. The work of J/V AS has been a favorite of mine, and this project project simply reinforces that preference. They simply don’t jump off the cliff with all the other “sheep-like” designers with the same repetitive moves so trendy right now. Cerebral thinking, a deft touch with design – this is a perfect example of making a piece of architecture “timeless”. Not only does it make its own visual statement, it is truly “of its place” looking as natural to the setting as the rock upon which it is built. Bravo!!

Agree with all above in particular Jimw and the quote ‘A-cero take note’….I wish interior shots were available also.
