This house is quite possibly one of the worst examples of modern architecture in our valley. The large intrusive brick wall and garage 2 tiered garage doors are an eye soar. The only thing this house has going for it is the location and views from the balcony. The interiors are horrendous…what is with those pendent lights and martini modern furnishings combined with the gothic candles stands? Come on this house does not deserve to be showcased on a site such as the contemporist.
Jason, you sound like a petty and jealous local designer. There are parts of this project that could be done better, but to describe this project as “horrendous” is just excessive hate-filled ranting.
Mike, To clarify I am far from jealous and not a designer but know good design when I see it. This house exemplifies the typical design found in most of “modern” homes built in Kelowna. Just goes to show yet again money can’t buy style.
I’m always skeptical of houses where the majority of the pictures show the view. Yes we get it has a great view but what about the architecture?
I feel like the house is very showy, almost vain in its expressiveness. I’m looking through all the pictures and it just seems to be about status and showing off. The complete/everything Miele kitchen, then the Wolf 6 burner stove…. it just doesn’t make sense for me. For something so clean lined then to abruptly break that with the status stove…
The architecture seems a bit muddled. What exactly is that tiered garage thing? Is that a boat ramp at the bottom, then the garage, then a guest room on top? Show me how that works. And then across the spiraling entrance, what exactly is encased in or the purpose of that massive 3-story brick plinth? I think there could have been so many more successful ways of dealing with an awkward site like this one appears to be.
The wood structure looks quite elegant, those 3 outdoor tapered columns are quite captivating, but then there are 2 more right next to walls in the house. Is that a nod to Mies or did you absolutely have to have the clerestory wall exactly in that spot which resulted in those columns?
It’s nice to see ‘modern’ style construction in Kelowna, but this house, from my vantage looks to be just expensive, and not very good.
Not feeling the brick wall at all. Would have gone natural stone, or as mentioned perhaps a green wall.
I’ve sailed past this house heading up toward vernon a few times, you can’t beat the view.
There is a similar development on that side of the lake, this home may or may not be part of it, called Sheerwater, by Mission Group. I believe the first one went for a very reasonable 4.3million. Lots themselves are 1.9m+
Took a look at your website and blog…..I could take your post here and apply it to pretty much everything in your portfolio. I think Miami Mike pretty much nailed it…..”petty and jealous designer”. ( and by the way….if you want to earn some respect you might want to consider changing the name of your firm FAD…..the “f-bomb” is tasteless and in your case overused in your text….typically a sign of shallow thinking of someone who isn’t intelligent enough to carry on a respectful conversation.)
Love Mr. Tyrell’s entry here….perfect? Depends on who’s paying for it, but some very nice spatial/material moves here.
Wow! the amount of comments this house has generated in such a short time. If art is supposed to generate contraversy this is a winner. Me? I wonder why you would take so much time and care to build such a light box on top of such a crass, clump of concrete?
The area where this house is located is in a forest fire danger area. A few years ago, there were really bad fires that destroyed hundreds of homes. The brick and concrete massing was probably chosen with the fires in mind. Also, the wood that you do see is glulam, which has a very high fire rating, which means it doesn’t burn well. It’s actually better than steel in a fire.
NOW THAT IS A STUNNING HOUSE! The architects attention to detail through materials and connections is profound, love all the view points he framed for each area in the house. The fire outside.. multi-use for heat and for security over the ledge. Great work! THUMBS UP ON THIS ONE!

This house is better looking than 99% of the houses in Kelowna.

I would install a green wall on that large exterior wall. That would be awesome.

Wow, those tapered wood columns are great.

love the exterior. Interior, expanse for the sake of expanse? furniture looks lost in the living area

Kelowna is filled with horrible architecture, and you people complain about this house?
Almost every house in Kelowna is worse than this one.

Really nice. Not sure if I’d feel comfortable with such high ceilings, but it looks like an amazing holiday gathering spot for family and friends. A+
