Desert House by Marmol Radziner
Marmol Radziner designed this house in Desert Hot Springs, California.

Description from Marmol Radziner:
Located in Desert Hot Springs, California, the prototype prefab home is located on a five-acre site and oriented to best capture views of San Jacinto peak and the surrounding mountains. Doubling the 2000 square foot interior space, the home extends towards the landscape with covered outdoor living areas.
Sheltered living spaces blend the indoors with the outdoors, simultaneously extending and connecting the house to the north wing, comprised of a guest house and art studio. The “L” shaped plan layout defines a protected courtyard that includes a pool and fire pit.

possibly the best pre-fabs around. Really great work but what’s with all the clunky furniture?

We looked into these when we were building a house. They are nice for what they are, and certainly look nice in this wide open desert setting, but are fairly expensive and exhorbitant if spec’d out like this one. For us this negated some of the percieved benefit of prefab. It appears the economies of scale are not in place to make this “affordable”, whatever that means with regard to a lot of the projects featured on this site.
