I wonder how many times things have fallen down the back of those kitchen shelves into the stairwell. And whats that green stuff (seaweed?) in the sink?

yeah how many times would that happen if you had kids in the house plus why does it need to be open ? its not like anyone can reach those shelves from the stairwell

um, you access the shelves from the kitchen side, not from the stairwell side.
clearly the openness is to keep the airiness and great light quality of the space.
