Wood Casting by Hilla Shamia
Hilla Shamia has designed furniture that combines cast aluminium and wood.
.
Description from the designer:
The negative factor of burnt wood is transformed into aesthetic and emotional value. Preservation of the natural form of the tree trunk within the explicit boundaries. The general, squared form intensifies the artificial feeling, and in the same time keeps the memory of the material.

hm, interesting. Very similar to what MTH is doing with resin. What happens when the wood expands/contracts?

While I am not sure this is entirely practical in the long run(don’t get me wrong, I am no expert in the area of physics e.g. expansion/contraction, nor biology(how the wood fibers behave at the connection with the firey-hot aluminum); will this hold together after a month?, but this certainly is quite stunning.

@shane I’d also have a major concern with the wood movement on these. We see it a lot here, designers not understanding wood’s properties. They design an object to beautiful now, but not in 5 years.

Really fantastic work! I also question the longevity of the wood, but if there was some way to remedy this I would love purchase one in a heartbeat.

Awesome design, awesome coupling of such oposite materials. No worries about wood or metal, or both staying together. There are channels of metal bridging sides in some designs.
Just so pretty! Love it.

Renzo Piano used cast aluminium and wood on a restoration project many years ago. Great combination of materials. V
