Shield House by Studio H:T
Studio H:T have designed the Shield House in Denver, Colorado.
.
Description from Studio H:T
This urban infill project juxtaposes a tall, slender curved circulation space against a rectangular living space. The tall curved metal wall was a result of bulk plane restrictions and the need to provide privacy from the public decks of the adjacent three story triplex. This element becomes the focus of the residence both visually and experientially. It acts as sun catcher that brings light down through the house from morning until early afternoon. At night it becomes a glowing, welcoming sail for visitors.

This is by far the most inspiring house that I’ve seen this month. Warm organic materials with fresh dynamic surfaces. Visually it makes the combination of curve and sharp angle appear harmonious which really makes the outdoor spaces work wonderfully. Excellent work!

What an excellent project. I really really like this. The curved wall gives it a definite nautical feel

Phenomenal!
THIS. IS. ARCHITECTURE!

Imagine the glare that curved metal wall creates for the next door neighbors relaxing on their decks. Personally I don’t find this architectural solution elegant, let alone nice to look at.
BUT I do like the backyard.

one half of a Steiner arch with exposed Japanese joinery and pegged mortise and tenon, what a delight.

I agree w/ Jess, I also like the rooftop sitting area

I appreciate the care and craftmnship in the detailing but overall, it feels a bit clunky to me. And where the ‘box’ meets the curve s just uncomfortable.

Agree with Rube about the “clunky” feel. Presents itself similar to Lautner’s Stevens Residence (1968) but not as elegant.

1. Rooftop is great.
2. Back yard is great.
3. I like the curved form but not sure from the photos what it is really contributing to the interior.
Overall though I really like it.
