Wareemba House by carterwilliamson
carterwilliamson have designed the Wareemba House in Sydney, Australia.
.
Project description
This is an alterations and additions project to a single corridor federation workman’s cottage. The brief was to make a family home for a family with 3 children. Removing the dark small living areas and kitchen, and replacing with a contemporary light filled and airy rear. services have been moved to the middle of the plan, the kitchen liberated to be the social hub of the home. Living areasĀ open onto the rear garden and courtyards to take advantage of Sydney’s temperature, almost sub tropical climate.

I like the open feel. The light looks well distributed. Kitchen look like a pleasing place to work. The concrete floors seem easy to live with as well (I also happen to find the concrete an aesthetically pleasing material).
Placement of the… ahem… services in the green bathroom disappoints. Certain facilities should just not be adjacent to each other.
Also, appreciate that budgets constrain us all on some level or other. But the exterior photos (exterior wall with the orange shutters are not at all pleasing to look at). Alot of nice work here, but that wall is just not at all pleasing to the eye.

Modern, efficient, quaint. BUT! > those stairs in the middle of everything is a complete disaster > I could go on about them but let’s just say the placement is no bueno. And yes, the bathroom needs re-thinking as well.

Can never understand placing a sink in the island and making it a focus point for the people sitting around. And we never see a sink like that full of dirty dishes on the photos.
The equivalent for a bathroom would be a toilet in the middle of the room.
