Description from Nina Bruun:

Influenced by the coming season and of nature, this chair is inspired by a bird’s nest. My idea was to create a graphical chaos which still felt like a unified whole.

The chair’s supporting structure consists of a bottom, seat and four stabilizing legs. To create a “nest feeling” I played with birch strips in different thicknesses and hurled them around the supporting structure. In order not to divert attention from the nest of birch strips, I have chosen to make a very anonymous upholstered cushion in a dusty chocolate brown which plays beautifully with the pale birch. It was natural for me that the chair had a soft center to create references to the bird’s nest, that are typically lined with down, to form a confident frame for eggs and chicks. It was very difficult to get the nest “right” I had to do the chair over and over again before it was perfect.

A series of stools made of metal tube-knots and wooden sticks. The metal fittings add colorful stripes to the sticks as a recollection of our childhood’s croquet.

John says:

The main carcass and legs of the sideboard are crafted using American black walnut whilst the doors are formed using a mixture of  walnut, oak, ash, poplar and sapele solid wood lamination’s.

In today’s throwaway society it has never been more important to reuse and recycle materials. My “Neapolitan” range of furniture does exactly this. By utilising what most furniture manufacturers would consider of no use, I have managed to create a variety of products that reuse off cuts and produce long lasting pieces of function art.

I was inspired to use a variety of solid wood lamination’s from my childhood memory of eating my way through bowls  of Neapolitan ice cream! I merged this past image with my love of Bridget Riley painting’s to create a visual landscape that I hope is inviting to the eye. Encourages you to follow the meandering lines of the wood and pause for a moment on the smooth sculpted ovals.  My furniture has a function to play, a practical purpose to fulfill  but I want my pieces to be more than just that. My aim is to encompass contemporary bespoke design with quality craftsmanship to give my clients a piece of functional art.

Description from the designer:

Focusing on “urban renewal” each piece gives new life to urban and suburban trees that have been previously removed and are destined to become waste or firewood. Naturally every log has a different shape, texture, and story adding uniqueness and a history to each piece. This natural individuality is contrasted by the simple, yet industrial elements of safety orange tube, orange upholstery and smoky copper tinted mirrors.

Inspiration for the concept came from continuously seeing beautiful pieces of unused logs lying around the neighborhoods surrounding the studio here in Venice, CA. The first run of furniture used redwood for the tables and chairs, and White Oak for the lights, however, there is such a variety of species available around the Los Angeles area that future generations will constantly be changing species.

KONNEX by Florian Gross

KONNEX is a basic cube set, which can be assembled to create a shelf unit. Additionally, different basic sets can be added to create a unique piece of storage furniture. For this, the different slits around one cube can be slid into the side walls of another. The concept of the basic set allows the modules to be moved and be stored easily occupying hardly any space.

Cameron says:

A puzzle of interlocking Ipe plates makes up the seat surface and the 11’ long powder coated base holds those plates together in a unique jagged shape.

This project seeks to create personal identity from ubiquitous uniformity.  I have assembled the pieces from a standard IKEA flat pack without following the instructions or I can say threw away the instruction.  Instead, I have simply composed the kits into customized furniture to suit my personal preference, adding some new details along the way.

The Radiator Bench
The Radiator Bench is as decorative as it is versatile. Hiding the radiator, it not only has the potential to function as a window sill for potted plants or as an extra seating space (with a view), it is also handy when entertaining guests, when you need an extra stool or a small table on the balcony, for example. It is easy to move around and easy to put to use. The bench is in massive White Oiled Ash and Lacquered Aluminium.

Massive Maple with Linoleum and Lacquered Aluminium, the shelf is movable. The Maple is from local forests on the Danish island of Funen and in general, all our designs are non-toxic.

The flowing wave that composes the Lounge Chair SURF alludes to a sense of calm. It is a soft swell in flux, a fluid gesture that changes to vary light. The method of its creator is the overriding canvas of the world for a new well-being that evokes calmness, casualness, driven by vibrant forms that are refreshing, awakening, and elevating and are metaphors for a new global dynamism.

VERTEX is a family of ultra-contemporary sculpted outdoor/indoor furniture. Triangular planes meet dynamically to create comfortable forms suitable for dining, meeting rooms, casual needs, or even banquet and lecture halls. VERTEX looks as if it were chiseled from a single block of material, what is left is structural yet, beautiful.

PAL is, as the name suggests, a friendly, modern line of indoor/outdoor furniture. The minimal iconic shape at the front of the object is revolved around, keeping a constant flow to the objects. The PAL stool is multi-functional – there is room for storage and when it flips over it becomes a small side table and when placed together with a second become an even larger coffee table.

We have brought back two different production techniques of traditional furniture making (lathe joined wood and steam bentwood) both came in a different period of time, and both are good examples of production technique innovations at that time.

We have combined them in a clear way to generate what we have defined as “Welding Wood.” Where two pieces connect, the section of the wood increases, and once this is done the wood is curved to achieve the structure and functionality.

The lathe work is no longer used just as an aesthetic provider, but it works more as a functionality provider, and that itself generates its own aesthetic.

The result is a sincere and transparent piece that possesses a formal, strong, robust, direct and very recognizable voice.

We have tried to provide new appreciation for antiquated production techniques. We have tried to create a skin in the object that allows us to establish an ancestral and close relationship.

The series is called “Forest in new form,” and was created through the desire to design functional and creative furniture using an unexpected material.

“I always liked the raw material of wood OSB (Oriented Strand Board)” said Maria Gustavsson industrial designer and founder of Swedish Ninja. “I became very interested when I heard about the new three-dimensional strand profile, developed by cleantech company Newbeam. I instantly fell in love with the girder structure and was inspired by the challenge of creating beautiful furniture out of this new, orthogonal standard.”

The inspiration for the furniture’s form was Tetris, the classic video game from the ‘90s. The result is a cast of strong characters who relay a cubic personality. They have strong will, are firmly planted on the ground, and support their users. The likely attraction to these little ninjas in undeniable. The question is, will you be able to choose a favorite?

“Forest in new form” is made of the eco-friendly material Oriented Strand Board. The OSB production process consumes 30% less energy than commonly used by a sawmill to produce the equivalent amount of structural components of the same size. The material is made up of three standard discs of planed wood, glued together. In addition to its eco-friendliness, OSB has many technical advantages. Long wood chips are randomly distributed and compressed under high pressure to yield a higher fiber density than in wood – OSB is stronger! By shaping OSB-material into a three dimensional beam form, Newbeam has managed to create a new profile for structural products.
