From the designer:

More books are printed every year, read and discarded. Even though many are taken to charity shops, they mostly go unsold and the charities have to pay for the books to be sent to landfill. For example 10,000 books a week from one charity will go to waste. There is currently no infrastructure set up to recycle the paper from books because the paper is low grade and the glue on the spine must be removed. These wasted books are used to create a beautiful chandelier. Every page is folded in half, producing a circular arrangement which hangs around a ceiling light.

Canadian designer Omer Arbel has created the 28 series of pendant lamps for BOCCI.

28 is a result of a glass blowing technique developed by Omer Arbel whereby air is intermittently blown in and then sucked out of an intermittently heated and then cooled glass matrix. The result is a distorted spherical shape with a composed collection of inner shapes, one of which houses a low voltage lamp.

28 pendants are designed to cluster in hexagonal shapes which nestle into each other to create patterns as dictated by the needs of the interior.

Standard 28 pendants are made in clear, white and frosted glass (with several other standard colour schemes contemplated in future months). However, 28 is a design which lends itself to infinite compositions and gradations of colour. Bocci’s glass atelier in Vancouver thrives on bespoke work and is able to work with our clients with great versatility on custom colour compositions to match the vistion and needs of a project or interior.

Nan18 Floor Lamp by Jörg Boner and Christian Deuber

Nan 18 is a standard lamp. The lamps comprise individual tin slats, arranged circularly to create a conic lampshade. The emergent light is soft and atmospheric. It falls as direct light through an opaque sheet of acrylic glass. Indirect light rises towards the ceiling. The arrangement of the individual slats results in the play of an atmospheric surround light on the outer shell. The lampshade stands on a stainless steel tube, which is also white. A concrete socle, either in white or naturally coloured concrete, creates the base for the standard lamp.

The standard lamp Nan18 marks a return to the principles of classical design, as employed by Achille Castiglioni in 1961 to create lamps for the legendary Splügen Bar in Milan, which subsequently found their way into public collections after the opening of the restaurant.

In this instance the impetus was provided by a specific project of the Meier/Leder team of architects from Baden. They commissioned designers Jörg Boner and Christian Deuber to develop a lamp for their new building project, an institutional residential project which resulted from an architectural competition. These lamps were one of the central elements of the lighting project, and were developed solely for this object.

Due to the high aesthetic and technical demands the lamps were developed and constantly optimized over a two-year period. The formal starting point was a structure traditionally feared for its dust-covered textile lampshades: the pleat structure. Thanks to the integration of contemporary aesthetic and technical aspects a surprising contrast with a new quality was achieved. The lamps comprise individual tin slats, arranged circularly to create a conic lampshade.

What Watt? is a memorial to and a celebration of the humble incandescent lightbulb. It’s a spherical chandelier, 1010mm in diameter made up of 1243 suspended bulbs of various shape and size, illuminated by a single low-energy light source. By 2011, all forms of incandescent light bulb will have been phased out in favour of greener alternatives. What Watt? marks the passing of a beautiful design that has remained relatively unchanged since its invention 130 years ago.

Designed and fabricated for a private commission. I will be producing an edition of ten.

Nora Lederer and Jia Zhao, the founders of nojiberlin, are a German/Asian design team that recently formed while studying together at the University of the Arts in Berlin.

The duo have created some new seating and lighting pieces that they will be exhibiting at the upcoming 2010 IMM Cologne furniture show.

.

The MOON floorlamp:
A simple construction made of three wooden sticks and a brass ring suspending a globe light in its airy place. Elegance on three legs.

.

The SHEEP stools:
The stools in the sheep series create a symbiosis of cold and warm, rigid and soft materials. Concrete steel is upcycled through handmade felt to create vanguard-seating furniture.

.

The SNOW Lounge:
The lounger SNOW plays with contradictions and reminds us of snow on a fence. The construction is made of rusty industrial steel, but the cushioning is made of handmade merino wool felt. This creates a symbiosis between an industrial product and handcraft (luxury), combining rigid and soft, light and dark, and reflecting the interest of nojiberlin in merging opposites.

.

The MAKI stools:
The idea for the MAKI collection came to us while eating sushi. The stools are abstract versions of maki rolls inspired by the original. One wants to sit down on the funny little chairs made of wood and felt and enjoy the sensation of being like a child. nojiberlin loves the carefree nature of youth.

Polish designers Dorota Kulawik and Jan Modzelewski, are both recent graduates from the Industrial Design Faculty at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. The two young designers have now formed their own design studio called StrawberryKingdom, and have created the Good King Henry Lamp as one of their first designs.

The Good King Henry lamp is made out of oak and powder coated steel tubes. It is surmounted by a fabric shade. The authors were guided by the idea of a perfect workmanship. The simplicity of the structural elements stresses their functionality and the combination of the bright colours with the pale hue of the wood gives the object subtleness. The shade was placed on a movable arm, which enables the users to adapt the inclination of the lamp so it best fits their needs and the nature of the interior. The irregular arrangement of the slats gives the lamp three different faces – the shape of the object changes according to the perspective from which it is observed. It awakens curiosity and encourages user interaction.
