Architecture firm Proctor & Shaw has completed the interior renovation of a London apartment, transforming a modest one-bedroom flat into a practical and elegant two-bedroom home. The redesign balances functionality with style, maximizing every inch of the property’s footprint while creating a calm, organised, and welcoming environment.
The renovation included reconfiguring the inefficient original layout to incorporate two double bedrooms, each with ensuite facilities, along with a generous open plan kitchen, dining, and living space. The new arrangement allows the apartment to feel open and spacious, while still providing private, restful areas for the bedrooms.
Upon entering the apartment, it’s immediately apparent that a wood slat wall is the focal point of the interior. This feature not only anchors the design visually but also provides a clever spatial solution, concealing bedrooms, bathrooms, and storage behind a single striking structure.
The open plan layout of the living room, dining area, and kitchen provides plenty of space for entertaining and everyday living. Both ends of the room are anchored with bespoke wall-to-wall furniture units in ultra-matt, clear-sealed, dark grey through-coloured MDF, topped with black pitted bespoke concrete worktops, combining elegance with functionality.
The timber wall also incorporates all storage and service requirements for the apartment, including kitchen appliances and hanging cupboards. By consolidating these elements into one integrated structure, the apartment achieves a highly efficient plan that keeps the open areas uncluttered.
Flush finished frameless doors and discreet machined handles are concealed within the timber profiles, leading to the bedrooms. This subtle detailing ensures continuity across the wall surface while maintaining easy access to private areas.
The bedrooms are simply finished yet thoughtfully designed. They feature flush-faced built-in hanging cupboards, bespoke Douglas fir bedside cabinetry, and hidden lighting that creates a calm, cocooned atmosphere, perfect for rest and relaxation.
The ensuite bathrooms feature a seamless microcement finish extends across the walls, floor, ceiling, and cabinetry, while bespoke concrete vanity units with integrated sinks and brushed stainless steel fixtures complete the clean, tactile aesthetic.
A closer look at the lye-washed Douglas Fir timber used for the wood slat wall reveals a thoughtful choice of material: warm, natural, and detailed, it provides both texture and cohesion to the apartment’s central feature, uniting function and beauty.
