In the heart of Charlevoix, Quebec, a couple with a passion for gastronomy imagined a contemporary house that would blend seamlessly with the region’s extraordinary landscape. Guided by the Canadian firm Architecture49, they created a home that serves both as a pied-à-terre and a luxury tourist residence, where families, friends, and colleagues can gather while soaking in the surrounding beauty.
Inspired by the St. Lawrence River and the rolling rural scenery, the owners achieved a minimalist and sustainable design that honors the natural environment in its simplicity.

The home’s exterior is defined by a neutral palette of black, white, and wood, complemented by eastern cedar, pine, and contemporary sheet metal roofing. At the side, a swimming pool invites residents and guests to enjoy warm summer days against the backdrop of the river and forest. Every choice, from materials to form, was made to maximize comfort while remaining discreetly integrated into the landscape.

A path running alongside the house leads from the front to the rear, offering an intuitive connection with the land. It allows visitors to move gracefully through the property while experiencing the natural setting, from forested edges to expansive views of the water.

Inside, the top level of the home is entirely devoted to social spaces. The open-plan living room, dining area, and kitchen share a continuous space, unified by a vaulted wood ceiling and polished concrete floors.
A large wall of windows at one end of the living room frames the river, filling the space with light and bringing the outdoors inside. The kitchen is equipped with professional-grade tools, making it ideal for the owners and guests who enjoy Charlevoix’s culinary offerings.

Sliding black-framed glass doors open to a deck, perfect for outdoor dining and taking in the scenery. Architecture49 designed these areas to encourage connection, creating spaces where residents can gather comfortably while enjoying unobstructed views of the river and surrounding forest.

Simple wood stairs lead down to the lower level, where sleeping areas and bathrooms are located. Here, multiple sets of bunk beds with wooden interiors, white ladders, and matching walls provide flexible accommodation for families and groups.

A separate bedroom features a matte black accent wall, black curtains, and an en-suite bathroom with large black tiles and a wood vanity that echoes the bedroom’s warmth and texture.

A powder room adds a graphic touch with black-and-white hexagonal tiles, while a wood-lined sauna provides a quiet place to relax and observe the trees outside. Every detail, from finishes to layout, reflects the owners’ desire for comfort, peace, and a connection with the natural environment.

The home’s floor plan follows the natural slope of the land, with volumes positioned to maximize intimacy and views. Social areas occupy the upper level, while bedrooms sit below, creating a cocoon-like environment that balances light, privacy, and energy efficiency.

In Charlevoix, where the river meets the mountains, this Quebec home proves that minimalist design can honor the land while offering warmth and comfort.
