In Mont Tremblant, Canada, Atelier Carle designed a lakeside home that takes full advantage of its dramatic setting on Lake Tremblant. Positioned on a steep site marked by rugged cliffs, the project finds its footing on a large, flat rock cap that acts as a natural base.
This rock formation becomes the starting point for the entire design. It creates a strong visual platform above the water while also shaping how the home is experienced from every angle.

A Black Exterior That Stands Out and Blends In
The home’s exterior is entirely black, giving it a bold presence against the landscape. At the same time, the dark finish works with the surrounding trees, shadows, and stone, allowing the structure to sit comfortably within its environment.
Horizontal and vertical siding add subtle variation across the facade, while the black roof and matching window and door frames create a consistent, unified look.

A Closer Look at the Materials
Up close, the exterior reveals a refined mix of textures. The siding emphasizes the linear form of the home, echoing the stretched shape of the rock it rests on.
The material palette keeps distractions to a minimum, letting the natural surroundings and the scale of the site take focus.

Interiors That Open to the Lake
Inside, the atmosphere shifts to a softer palette. Polished concrete floors set a clean base, while warm wood elements bring contrast and comfort.
The entryway leads directly to a wall of windows, drawing the lake into view and creating an immediate connection between indoors and out.

A Living Room Framed by Texture
The living room introduces layered materials that add depth without overwhelming the space. Wood accents extend across the ceiling, while a black fireplace is set into a stone wall.
This combination ties together the tones found throughout the home, from the dark exterior to the natural textures of the site.

A Minimal Kitchen with Warm Wood
Adjacent to the living area, the kitchen continues the use of wood in a more refined way. The cabinets are hardware-free, keeping the surfaces clean and uninterrupted.
A large island anchors the space, offering generous room for preparation and gathering while maintaining the home’s simple material palette.

Light-Filled Circulation Between Levels
Steel and glass stairs connect the different levels of the home, adding a lighter, more transparent element to the interior.
Positioned beside large windows, the staircase becomes more than just circulation. As you move between floors, shifting views of the surrounding rock cliffs and landscape unfold with each step.

Wood Details That Carry Through
The use of wood continues into the hallways, where a slat wall introduces texture and rhythm along the circulation spaces. This consistent material language ties the rooms together, creating a cohesive flow from one area to the next.

From its position on a rugged rock platform to its dark exterior and warm interior palette, this lakeside home by Atelier Carle turns a complex site into a defining feature. Every move, from the layout to the materials, works with the land, creating a house that feels both bold and calm in one of Québec’s most dramatic landscapes.
