This Austin Home Uses Clerestory Windows To Block The Road And Capture Light

Board-formed concrete walls, grasses, and warm wood details shape the entrance to this modern Austin home.

Ravel Architecture completed a modern home in Austin, Texas, with a boomerang-inspired shape that follows the natural curve of the hillside. The sweeping form allows the house to open toward expansive canyon and city views, while tall walls and clerestory windows along the western side provide privacy from the nearby road and help filter natural light into the interior throughout the day.

The combination of concrete, glass, and warm wood gives the home a clean modern appearance that still feels inviting and comfortable.

A Concrete Wall Guides Visitors To The Entry

The approach to the house begins with a pathway lined with grasses that runs alongside a long board-formed concrete wall. The textured concrete adds depth to the exterior, while a wood accent wall at the entrance introduces the warmer materials found throughout the home.

The layered landscaping and tall walls create a sense of privacy before stepping inside the house.

Floor-To-Ceiling Glass Frames The Landscape

On the canyon-facing side of the home, floor-to-ceiling glass stretches across the facade to capture uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape and the Austin skyline beyond. The large windows also fill the living spaces with natural light and strengthen the connection between the indoors and outdoors.

At one end of the home, a swimming pool overlooks the canyon, creating another place to enjoy the elevated hillside setting.

Open Living Spaces Feature Warm Wood And Bold Contrast

Inside, the living room, dining area, and kitchen are arranged in an open-plan layout that keeps the views visible from nearly every angle. Light wood cabinetry and recessed shelving niches add warmth to the interiors, while a large black kitchen island and black tiled backsplash introduce contrast to the softer material palette.

A secondary living area located closer to the pool offers a more relaxed space for entertaining and opens directly to a covered patio. A hallway lined with board-formed concrete connects the two living spaces while also leading to the bedrooms, bathrooms, and guest areas located in the southern wing of the house.

Bedrooms And Bathrooms Keep The Views In Focus

In one of the bedrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the surrounding trees, allowing the landscape to become part of the room itself. The bathrooms continue the same approach, using large mirrors and natural light to create bright and open spaces.

White oak and Venetian plaster finishes soften the interiors and balance the stronger concrete elements seen throughout the home.

The Floor Plan Reveals The Home’s Curved Layout

The floor plan shows how the home has been divided into northern and southern wings connected through shared living spaces and covered outdoor areas. The curved boomerang-inspired layout helps nearly every major room take advantage of the canyon and city views while creating separation between public and private areas.

With its curved form, expansive glazing, textured concrete walls, and warm wood finishes, this Austin home by Ravel Architecture makes full use of its hillside location. The combination of open interiors, outdoor living areas, and panoramic views creates a modern home that feels both striking and welcoming.
