White Cedar and Black Steel Define This Scandinavian-Inspired Home

In Windsor, Canada, Dory Azar Architect Inc. has completed a modern family home that embraces Scandinavian influences through simple forms, natural materials, and clean architectural lines. The project, known as the ‘J’ Residence, came together after the homeowners decided to move away from an earlier design that no longer reflected the type of home they truly wanted to live in.

The family already had approved drawings, a contractor, and even a building permit, but the house still didn’t feel right. During early conversations with architect Dory Azar, the homeowners revealed what they had actually been drawn to all along, minimal Scandinavian homes with understated materials, bright interiors, and uncomplicated layouts. That shift completely changed the direction of the project.

Three Distinct Volumes Shape The Home

The layout of the home is organized into three separate volumes, each serving a different purpose. Together, the forms create the ‘J’-shaped plan that gives the residence its name.

One section contains the more private areas of the home, including the bedrooms, bathrooms, and a playroom. Another volume is dedicated to the garage and storage spaces, while the central connecting section houses the kitchen, dining, and living areas where the family spends most of their time together.

The long linear forms and low profile also reinforce the Scandinavian influence the homeowners originally envisioned.

White Cedar And Black Metal Create A Bold Exterior

From the outside, the home balances softness and contrast through a restrained material palette. Vertical white cedar siding wraps the exterior, bringing texture and warmth to the minimalist structure, while black standing seam metal roofs add sharp definition to the overall composition.

The contrast between the pale wood and dark roofing gives the house a crisp modern appearance without feeling overly harsh. The materials also highlight the simple geometry of the architecture, allowing the forms themselves to become the focus.

A pathway extending from the driveway guides visitors toward the front entrance. Lined with planting, the walkway softens the architecture and adds a welcoming transition between the landscape and the home.

A Bright Living Room Welcomes You Inside

Stepping through the front door, the interior immediately feels calm and uncluttered. White walls keep the space bright and airy, while polished concrete floors add a smooth modern finish that continues throughout much of the home.

The living room combines minimal styling with subtle moments of warmth. A black fireplace creates contrast against the light interior palette, becoming a simple focal point within the room. Beside it, a built-in window bench includes integrated firewood storage, adding both functionality and texture.

The Dining Area Connects The Shared Spaces

Positioned between the living room and kitchen, the open dining area acts as a central gathering point within the home. The space is furnished with a wood dining table surrounded by black dining chairs, continuing the balanced contrast found throughout the interior.

The open-plan layout allows the shared living spaces to feel connected without losing definition between each area. Views between the rooms also help natural light move freely through the interior.

Minimal Materials Define The Kitchen

The kitchen continues the home’s Scandinavian-inspired approach through a restrained palette of wood, white surfaces, and simple detailing.

Light wood cabinetry and open shelving bring warmth and texture to the room, while minimalist white cabinets help maintain the bright, uncluttered appearance. The open shelving also contributes to the relaxed atmosphere of the kitchen, allowing everyday items to become part of the visual design.

Concrete Floors Bring Continuity Throughout The Interior

Polished concrete flooring appears throughout much of the home, including the hallways and shared living spaces. The material gives the interiors a clean and durable surface while helping unify the different rooms.

A Flexible Music And Living Space Adds Personality

Beyond the main living areas, the home also includes a secondary lounge that doubles as a music room. This additional space gives the family flexibility while adding another layer to the home’s layout.
