Inside a Small House Built for Art, Cooking, and Country Living

The combination of black-stained pine and weathering steel gives this small New York home a bold exterior that will continue to change over time.

In North Branch, New York, Studio MM completed a compact modern home wrapped in weathering steel and black-stained pine. Created for a couple looking to downsize, the one-bedroom residence embraces a simpler way of living while making room for the things they enjoy most, including cooking, entertaining, and creative pursuits.

Wrapped in Weathering Steel

One of the home’s most striking features is its exterior. Studio MM combined black-stained pine siding with Corten steel, creating a facade that feels both modern and timeless.

The weathering steel is arranged in 18-inch panels that wrap continuously around the house. The design team aligned the steel seams with horizontal architectural lines, including window edges and the perimeter of the building. This approach creates a crisp, orderly appearance while also reducing material waste and avoiding the additional expense of cutting custom-sized panels.

A Low-Profile Design Built Around the View

Although modest in size, the home makes the most of its hilltop location. The single-story design stretches across the site, allowing every major room to enjoy views across the surrounding fields.

The home’s orientation also contributes to its performance. Studio MM studied the sun’s path to determine the ideal roof overhang dimensions. During summer, the overhangs help limit excessive heat gain, while in winter they allow sunlight to penetrate deep into the interior.

Natural ventilation plays an equally important role. Large sliding doors on the south side work together with operable windows on the north side, allowing breezes to flow through the house and reducing the need for mechanical cooling.

Warm Materials and Open Living Spaces

Inside, the home balances industrial materials with warm natural finishes. The most dramatic feature is the floor-to-ceiling weathering steel fireplace surround, which includes a slightly recessed wood-burning firebox and a built-in niche for storing firewood.

The fireplace anchors the open-plan living area, where the lounge, dining room, and kitchen share a single space overlooking the surrounding farmland. Clerestory windows introduce additional daylight from above, helping the interior feel bright throughout the day.

Polished concrete floors run throughout the house. Beyond their clean contemporary appearance, they serve as thermal mass, absorbing and releasing heat to improve energy efficiency and indoor comfort.

A Bathroom Framed by Nature

Even the bathroom maintains a strong connection to the landscape. Locally sourced oak slabs form the vanity, introducing texture and warmth against the home’s more industrial materials.

Large windows frame uninterrupted views of the fields outside, turning a functional room into a place where the changing seasons become part of the experience. Water-conserving brass fixtures from Brizo add another layer of efficiency while contributing to the home’s refined material palette.

A Dedicated Space for Creativity

A covered outdoor patio sits between the main residence and a separate art studio, creating a sheltered gathering space complete with a firepit and seating area.

Clad in the same weathering steel as the house, the studio extends the architectural language while serving a completely different purpose. Designed as a flexible creative workspace, it gives the homeowners room to pursue a wide range of interests, from photography and painting to knitting, yarn dyeing, crafting, and soap making.

By separating the studio from the main living spaces, Studio MM created an environment where creative projects can flourish while remaining closely connected to the home itself.

Studio MM’s North Branch home shows how a modest footprint can still deliver generous views, strong architectural identity, and spaces tailored to the people who live there. From its evolving Corten steel exterior to its bright interiors and dedicated art studio, the project focuses on quality over quantity.
