Designed by Hacker Architects in Central Oregon, Riverfold House is a family home that sits beside a river where life and rugged landscape meet. Positioned on a basalt outcrop, the home follows the movement of the nearby rapids through its long, linear layout while offering privacy from the public river’s edge.
Every part of the design responds to the surrounding landscape, from its sculptural roofline to its natural material palette, creating a home where changing views of water, sky and land are always close at hand.

A Sculptural Exterior Inspired by the Landscape
The home’s architecture immediately stands out through its sweeping roof, which folds and tilts across the building in a series of striking angles. Its form echoes the surrounding landforms while opening views toward the expansive Central Oregon sky.

Outside, silvered cedar cladding is designed to weather naturally over time, allowing the home to blend into its environment, while Douglas fir introduces warmth and texture throughout the design. Anchored to volcanic basalt, the house feels firmly rooted in its location while still appearing to stretch alongside the river.

A Winding Arrival With Glimpses of the River
Arriving at Riverfold House is designed as an experience. Visitors follow a winding path between staggered board-formed concrete walls and vertical timber louvers, with brief glimpses of the river appearing along the way.

The journey ends at a courtyard with seating, where a blackened steel pivot door opens into the largest space in the home. Throughout the site, massive volcanic boulders sourced from nearby land create dramatic sculptural features that strengthen the connection between the house and its landscape.

A Living Space Framed by Water and Light
Positioned above the river, the living room captures views through floor-to-ceiling windows, that reinforce the feeling of living between the rocky landscape and the flowing water.

A sculptural fireplace forms one of the home’s most memorable interior features. Shifted, stepped and faceted in form, it is clad in rough-textured white brick that reflects the fractured appearance of nearby basalt formations. Positioned as a focal point, the fireplace also helps bounce natural light throughout the surrounding living spaces.

Courtyards That Bring the Landscape Home
Stepping outside, there’s a patio with bench seating surrounding a fire table. A stepped pathway and staggered concrete walls descend through a garden before continuing the journey toward the river’s edge.

A Warm Dining Room Made for Gathering
Back inside, and natural light fills the dining room through tall windows, highlighting the warm timber finishes that continue throughout the home. Vertical timber slats subtly define the space while maintaining an open connection with the surrounding living areas.

A Bright Kitchen With Views of the Trees
The kitchen pairs warm timber cabinetry with brass accents and a crisp white island, creating a bright and welcoming space at the center of the home. A black range hood introduces contrast, while oversized windows frame views of the surrounding greenery. Beside the kitchen, a round breakfast table is positioned to take advantage of the natural outlook.

A Journey Through the Heart of the Home
Movement through the home follows a long central circulation route that links each living space while passing alternating courtyards along the way. This sequence creates constantly changing views through the house and into the landscape beyond. Underfoot, custom white terrazzo flooring draws inspiration from the region’s pumice layers, adding a subtle geological reference that continues the home’s connection to Central Oregon.

A Cozy Living Room Centered Around the Fireplace
Set within timber-lined walls, a secondary living room offers a quieter place to unwind while continuing the home’s warm material palette. A softly glowing paper lantern adds sculptural character above black leather seating, while tall windows fill the room with natural light and views outdoors. The sleek fireplace creates an inviting focal point, complemented by a layered rug, glass coffee table and subtle greenery that add texture without overwhelming the space.

A Warm and Inviting Bedroom
In a bedroom, warm timber wraps the bedroom across floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, paneled walls and the ceiling, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. A built-in headboard incorporates generous storage while maintaining the room’s clean, uncluttered appearance.

A Spa-Like Bathroom With a Sunken Bath
The primary bathroom features a wall of slender timber slats that filters daylight while framing leafy views outside. A floating vanity, pale countertop and brass fixtures contribute to the clean, understated design, while the sunken bathtub provides a unexpected element in the room.

Texture and Light in the Guest Bathroom
In a guest bathroom, sunlight casts changing geometric shadows across the surfaces throughout the day, adding depth to the simple palette.

A Small Space With Big Style
The powder room embraces a lighter palette, where geometric wall tiles introduce subtle texture without overwhelming the compact space. A floating white basin, brass plumbing and a curved tap add refined detail, while a glowing globe pendant provides soft illumination overhead.
