Tucked into a quiet Elwood street, this Melbourne home conceals a bold transformation. Designed by Australian architecture studio FIGR, the modern addition reimagines life on a narrow suburban block, using a vaulted ceiling, carefully placed openings, and an open plan layout to draw light deep into the home.
Set on a 210 square metre site just over six metres wide, the project navigates heritage controls, flood overlays, and neighbouring trees through a restrained architectural response. A simplified pitched roof form references the surrounding streetscape, while black standing seam metal, Silvertop Ash shiplap, and weatherboard create a layered exterior, complemented by reclaimed bricks reused in the backyard paving.

Inside, the vaulted ceiling immediately sets the tone. The new living room, dining room, kitchen, and loft are all arranged within a tall, open volume that makes the narrow footprint feel expansive. The plan remains practical and fluid, allowing each zone to flow naturally into the next while maintaining a clear sense of purpose.
The living room is anchored by a black fireplace that becomes an instant focal point. It sits on a custom-built low shelf that runs along the wall, giving the space a grounded and intentional feel. The couch is positioned to face the fireplace, reinforcing the room as a place to pause and unwind beneath the soaring ceiling.

That low shelf subtly shifts function as it moves through the space. Near the doors opening to the backyard, it transforms into a bench, creating a practical spot to sit while strengthening the connection between indoors and out. Large openings bring in natural light and extend the living area visually into the garden beyond.

Behind the couch sits the dining room, where timber-lined walls draw attention to the geometry of the vaulted ceiling above. The warmth of the wood creates an intimate backdrop for the dining table and chairs, while the open plan arrangement keeps the space connected to the rest of the home.

In the kitchen, a large island becomes the centerpiece. Black accents echo the dark exterior and complement the sharp black edge of the loft above. A mirrored backsplash reflects the backyard greenery, pulling light deeper into the interior and adding an unexpected layer of depth to the space.

Above the kitchen, a compact loft adds flexibility without overwhelming the main volume. Accessed by a ladder that hangs discreetly on the wall, the loft feels like a playful addition that takes full advantage of the roof height while keeping the floor plan uncluttered.

The bathroom continues the home’s clean and restrained approach. Tiles wrap the walls, creating a calm and cohesive envelope. A freestanding bathtub sits beneath the window, while a minimalist glass shower screen allows daylight to move freely through the room, enhancing the sense of openness.

FIGR’s design shows how a narrow block and modest exterior can conceal a light-filled, spatially rich interior that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to its context.
