Surrounded by meadows, trees, and the nearby coast, the project brings together traditional architecture and modern updates, creating a home that feels both familiar and new.
A Classic Villa Reimagined in Bergen
The redesign begins with a complete rethink of the internal layout. BNLA architecten reorganized the floor plan to better suit modern living, introducing a more open and connected sequence of spaces. A larger entrance sets the tone on arrival, leading into living areas that flow naturally from one to the next. Openings between rooms and carefully placed windows allow light and views to move through the house, making the surrounding landscape a constant presence.
Preserving the Thatched Silhouette
The thatched roof remains one of the defining elements of the villa, preserving its traditional appearance. By restoring and maintaining this feature, the architects ensured the home keeps its original identity from the outside. Against this familiar silhouette, the newer architectural additions stand out with a more minimal and structured expression, creating a clear contrast between old and new.
Open Living with Views in Every Direction
The living spaces benefit most from the updated layout. With fewer barriers between rooms, the living room feels open and connected to the rest of the home. Large openings frame views of the outdoors, while natural light moves easily across the space. The result is a setting that feels relaxed and spacious, suited to both everyday use and entertaining.
A Minimalist Kitchen
The kitchen is integrated into the wider living area, making it part of the home’s social core. A new wellness extension introduces a completely different architectural language. Inspired by the work of Tadao Ando, this addition features strong geometry and solid materials. Inside, it houses a swimming pool, sauna, and steam room. Large folding glass panels open the space to the terrace, allowing it to shift between indoor and outdoor use depending on the season.
By removing later additions and refining the original structure, BNLA architecten have revealed the villa’s original qualities while updating it for modern use. Improved insulation, high-performance glazing, and advanced systems enhance energy efficiency, ensuring the home performs as well as it looks.
