In Golden Valley, Minnesota, a mid-century modern home has been reborn. Strand Design, in collaboration with Str8 Modern, undertook a complete renovation that honors the house’s original character while adding contemporary touches that elevate its functionality and aesthetic.
From the street, the home announces itself with a black and wood exterior that contrasts with its expansive yard and mature trees. A small bridge arches gently from the driveway to the front door, a playful nod to the house’s original low-slung lines.

Inside, the formal living room greets visitors with a sofa and a pair of armchairs positioned to take full advantage of floor-to-ceiling windows. Natural light floods the space, and views of the quiet street beyond enhance the sense of openness.

Toward the rear of the home, a family room provides a cozy yet sophisticated gathering area. A gray paneled wall anchors the space, mirrored by a matching sofa, while a double-sided fireplace creates warmth visible from both the family room and the adjacent dining area.

A folding glass wall blurs the line between indoors and out, opening the living room to a wood deck that extends the living space into the yard. The connection to nature is seamless, a signature of mid-century modern design.

The dining room continues the home’s natural material palette. A wood dining table surrounded by dark gray chairs sits in front of a black wine rack mounted on a brick wall, blending elegance with warmth.

Next to the dining area, the kitchen balances wood cabinetry with minimalist black hardware and white countertops. Positioned on the other side of the double-sided fireplace, it forms a subtle visual connection to the rest of the home while remaining its own distinct space.

A bedroom tucked behind a hidden door between the kitchen and dining room demonstrates thoughtful design. A wood headboard with built-in side tables brings a natural element indoors, complementing a floating wood shelf across the room.

In the main bathroom, a long wood vanity topped with a white counter and undermount sinks pairs with black tile flooring and shower walls, creating a clean, modern aesthetic.

Natural light continues to play a role throughout the home. A skylight above the front door illuminates the staircase leading to the lower level, while black handrails mirror the home’s black window frames and exposed beams, tying details together throughout the interior.

A second bathroom uses white walls and a light wood vanity to maintain brightness, with artwork introducing color and personality.

Practicality meets design in the laundry room. A long bench and wall of cabinetry house the washer and dryer discreetly, maintaining the home’s streamlined appearance.

A bar area adds another layer of craftsmanship to the home. Matte and glossy tiles cover the wall, paired with a black countertop that echoes other design elements throughout the house, creating a small space that is both functional and stylish.

This Golden Valley mid-century modern home shows how every element, from skylights to hidden doors, reinforces an interior that feels thoughtful, open, and intimately connected to its surroundings.
