KHAB Tapioca Empress, nicknamed “Hoops,” reimagines what a bubble tea shop can be. Located in Winnipeg, Canada, and brought to life by the team at Design Shop, this space delivers big personality, blending the lively spirit of street markets and the fun, social nature of boba culture, all wrapped in a bold, basketball-inspired design.

Despite a modest footprint, the interior layout is anything but limited. The flow moves intentionally from ordering to pickup, guiding customers along a semi-transparent pink plexiglass wall that offers a glimpse into the fast-paced back of house. The pink panels, with curved black detailing, reference basketball court lines while keeping the visual energy high.

Soft touches balance out the athletic edge. Cushioned pink wall details mimic gym mats, while tiled grids and window decals subtly nod to the weave of a basketball net. Even the mirrors do double duty: they reflect light and movement, but also extend the visual depth of the space, echoing the energy of a packed court crowd.

Every detail plays into the sporty-meets-Kawaii theme. Epoxy floors, locker-style storage, and minimalist benches recall gym changing rooms. Instead of hiding supplies in the back, full-height lockers with numbered doors house and display merchandise and supplies in plain sight. A ball cage holds branded basketballs, and a ladder attachment allows staff to access the upper tiers, merging form and function in a way that feels natural to the space.

The design is full of unexpected moments. Images of the menu hang from coach’s clipboards. A glowing pink neon sign channels the brightness of night markets. Scoreboard-style screens add to the court-side vibe. It’s a space that doesn’t take itself too seriously, yet every design decision is purposeful.

KHAB Tapioca Empress is proof that bold ideas can thrive in small spaces. With a fusion of playful aesthetics and sports references, it offers an experience that’s as much about atmosphere as it is about bubble tea.
