This Wooden Grid Roof Floats Above Stone and Terracotta

The JCA House in Itaipava, Brazil, was designed by Magarão + Lindenberg Arquitetura and completed in 2025. From the first glance, one element quietly takes the lead, a sweeping wooden grid roof that curves across the main living areas, held up by just eight slim metal pillars.

The home stretches across a plateau, staying close to the ground and opening out to greenery and a nearby lake. That single roofline guides the layout, the views, and the experience of the house from day to night.

Concrete slabs set into grass lead through dense vegetation toward stone and terracotta volumes. The house unfolds gradually, inviting discovery across the plateau with views of greenery and a nearby lake.

The approach to the home feels calm, with concrete slabs resting directly on grass, surrounded by dense vegetation that softens the path forward. Ahead, volumes of stone and terracotta come into view. They do not reveal everything at once. The house unfolds gradually as you move across the site.

Material choices feel precise and intentional. Moledo stone walls were detailed to fully conceal the glass frames when open. Once slid away, interior and exterior read as one continuous space.

At the center sits a volume finished in a custom terracotta toned textured render developed exclusively for the project. It houses the kitchen, wine cellar, and services. The same finish continues into the gourmet area and across the facade of the main suite, linking the separate volumes visually.

The large multi-laminated curved timber (MLC) roof brings the home together. Structured in a diagonal grid with a gentle curve and counter curve, it covers the patio in one continuous span. Only eight light metal pillars support it, keeping the structure open and airy.

From below, the grid reads like a contemporary dome. From outside, it stands clearly apart from the rest of the construction.

At night, the roof glows from within. The pillars fade into shadow, and the warmth of the wood reflects in the water, with the mountains silhouetted against the blue of the Serra.

The pool sits at the edge of the slope to take in the valley view, while its waterline aligns with the distant terrain, reinforcing the home’s connection to its setting.
